The Lonely Introduction
Even on the busiest servers you aren't likely to see many folks in the starter zones: Tutorial until level 2, then Introduction until about level 7. The Tutorial is private to you: you'll never see anyone else. The Introduction is instanced: you may see other folks also running the Introduction but you won't see or hear the normal server population until you finish it.After you finish the Introduction you'll join the rest of the normal server population, and gain access to regional chat channels like /OOC, /Trade and /Advice.
Picking a Server
There are lots of reasons a particular server might be right (or wrong) for you. These differ, naturally, from person to person. Some folks love the boisterous climate and competition of a large server, while others prefer the more immersive experience of a less populated server. If you are someone who likes to group with other players, will there enough around at your level during the times you play? How will you fit with the server's community?New Servers for Free-to-Play Launch
LOTRO has added four new servers for the Free-to-Play (F2P) launch: Riddermark, Imladris, Crickhollow and Dwarrowdelf. Any account type can play on any new or existing server; there are no "F2P-only" or "VIP-only" servers.Server Population
Turbine doesn't release population numbers for it's servers, but player consensus is that these three servers have the highest populations: Brandywine, Elendilmir, and Landroval. Historically, Brandywine has had the highest population. Elendilmir, as the unofficial Oceanic server, tends to have more action at non-primetime hours. Landroval, as the unofficial role-playing server, tends to have a more server events and a more mature, intellectual community. Of the new servers, Riddermark is expected to have the largest population. Is playing on a big server for you? You'll get more pick-up grouping and raiding opportunities, and more chatter in public chat channels. On the other hand, you'll find more competition for just about everything and you may experience lag in crowded areas. Sign-in queues have been rare in LOTRO so far, but that may change with Free-to-Play.
Most players believe the rest of the servers are about the same size these days. Historically Windfola, Vilya and Firefoot were believed to have smaller-than-average populations, but the gap seems to have closed.
Is playing on a new F2P server, or one of the formerly small servers for you? It might be. These servers tend to have more players who are new to the game, and the low-to-mid levels may be more active than on a larger server.
The mid-sized established servers tend to have the highest contentration of "LOTRO classic" players: adults who are really into the Tolkien lore. These also tend to have fewer players from WoW, and less tolerance for "l33t" or "Barren's Chat" style chatter. The early levels can be the loneliest on these servers.
Feeling Out a Server's Community
The best way to feel out the community is to listen, chat and ask questions in public chat channels, especially during the times you normally play. If folks react negatively to what you say or how you say it, you might not be a fit for the server's community. Try another server if your first choice doesn't click for you. Most servers have a server-wide chat channel called GLFF. This is a player-created channel, but it's used by players of all levels to some degree. It's one place to get a feel for the how active and social a server is, and where its chat standards fall on the "raunchy-to-prissy" scale.
To join GLFF, type: /joinchannel GLFF.
To chat in GLFF, type: /1 whatever you want to say
The GLFF chatter will go to your General Tab by default. To toggle GLFF on/off right-click the tab, select "Change Filters" and click "User Chat 1". Many players make a new tab for GLFF chat and drag this off to a different place on the screen so they can follow the chatter and still see their other tabs for game info or private chat.
Also, try posting on the official forum for your server. Be sure to look at the Kinships subforum, and post to recruiting threads for kinships that accept new players. Look beyond the top few threads on the Kinships page, as these tend to get spam from raiding kins jockeying for the top spot in the list.
Finding Other Players Your Level
LOTRO makes this pretty easy for you: press O, and select the Fellowing tab. In the Filter Who List section, set the "Player Level" range to be a couple levels higher and lower than your current level. If you want to see players in other zones as well, clear the "Filter" box. Players that are looking for fellowship will have a green person icon to the left of their names. Players already in groups will have a blue icon.By checking the Fellowing tab during the hours your normally play you can estimate how many players are in your level range, which zones they are in, and how much grouping is happening.

One the Vilya server, the player made global channel is called Unite, so:
/joinchannel Unite
I don't even know if they have a GLFF channel there.
As a note on Firefoot we have (in the last week no less) had several kin mates complain that the server was full and they could not log in.
This should of course calm down once the f2p newness wares off. I am sure there will be a significant drop after awhile, it just happens.
In my past experience for instance DDO, mostly kids well move on after they ask mommy and daddy to buy points for them to open the next area, and then after mommy and daddy stop laughing, they will move on because most do not have the desire to grind up more TP. Do not get me wrong I do not mind f2p our kin has had many f2p players convert to VIP accounts after they found out how much they actually enjoy the game. I think the f2p has had the desired effect Turbine was looking for a new in flux of players.

I am from firefoot F2P, after 3 days of playing almost non-stop today is the first time I am having trouble getting on the game. I am not sure if the game data is having a hard time loading or I can't log in, because it says connected, all loading are fine, etc.. I am just stuck with the loading screen the the loading bar is full. I am actually just waiting for the game to appear, waited for like 10 minutes, 20 now 35.. i will try another server, too bad I already worked hard on my crafting and titles. that's f2p to you xD.
Did you consider restarting your computer? You generally get the full server issue before the game starts up.
To add, while LOTRO has had intermittent server issues since F2P has launched, they've generally been resolved fairly quickly. The Technical Support forum (http://forums.lotro.com/forumdisplay.php?16-Technical-Support) is a good place to start.
I started with F2P, and found Landroval has a very helpful community and you don't need to be a Role-Player to play there. There are lots of Kin looking for RP'ers and non-RP'ers. And the amount of RP varies even within the RP Kins.(light, medium, and heavy RP)
I assume the same exists on the other servers too. I just picked it because my RL friends are there.
Basically the same story for me (well, with the exception of "RL friends" . . . I don't have any). Landroval is a great server, and around half the people I've encountered there have been RPers, which is perfect for me - I've wanted to try RP for a long time, but this is the first game I've found that actually seems to have an active RP community.
in response to anonymous. Iam a new player that was F2P but recently went to premium for trade perks. In my first few days i had the login problem as well, but i noticed it only happened when i launched from my taskbar instead of my desktop.Launching from desktop solved the problem.
i wish you could list an ip table for your servers so i know which i could get most reliable connections...
I switched from Brandywine to Gladden to play with an IRL friend, and I've really enjoyed it. Brandywine was crowded at low-levels and empty at mid-levels (where I am now, 47). Gladden is a pretty mature crowd, and even GLFF is REASONABLY tame; mostly just class vs class trash talk. Areas like Rivendell seem populated, and you'll see other folks running around questing and most seem down for pick-up fellowships. Just my 2 cents

Windfola (16%) Brandywine (4%) (US Lotro Server Feb. 18, 2011)
Why "Windfola" could become the most crowded lotro server is always beyond my understanding. When I entered the Middle earth, and that was one year ago,it was well known that "Brandywine" was the most popular server.
Does anyone could explain this population trends in Lotro?
Excuse for my poor English and enjoy this wonderful game:)
So sad i choose the less populated server :( Nau i have 2 start over >:(
I agree, generally, with what everyone has said. I just want to make a note about Landroval: if you are looking to actually go through the gameplay of LOTRO (raids, instances, grouping for loot and marks), you should look somewhere else. The kinships on Landroval are largely RP-based, and they focus on non-gameplay content like RP events, so it's often hard to find 5 other people to go on instance runs with you. It's equally as hard to find a kinship that actually focuses on end-game content and doesn't get distracted with cosmetics and pipeweed.
Role-playing never fails to fascinate some players. You must admidt some end-game content is noting but some change of digital number though chanllaging the limitation of a fellowship or kinship is interesting. I have done it ag and ag in other MMORPG, such as WOW. Now its time to try some "real" advanture! "Cosmetics and Pipeweed" "non-gameply content like RP events", it sounds great!BTW: I finally find the tend of lotro population, the new players are guided into a specific low-population server for weeks (Winfola for last a few weekds), then the Turbine will change another low-population server for another new players' migration.
I am a F2P player returning to the game after a few years (I started as a P2P player.) I play on the Nimrodel server and was wondering if it is worth switching to another.
If you are interested in PvMP (Same to PVP), Brandywine or Elendilmir perhaps is your best choice. Why? You can check the population of PvPers from http://surugi.com/lotrostats/index.php.
which server should i choose?
I cannoy add any of my friends in game, tells me 'player does not exist? We are from the UK, do you think I downloaded the US client!!??
