After completing the Introduction, hobbits start in The Shire. Filled with lore from "The Hobbit", The Shire is pastoral and sleepy, filled with trees to nap under after polishing off a hobbit breakfast and a slice of apple pie. Leveling in The Shire is a bit less combative then the other starting areas - you are as likely to be delivering pies and mail as fending off brigands and other threats.
As you quest in the Shire, you'll have the opportunity to earn Gift Mathoms - old and useless objects which hobbits like to give as presents many times over. Turn these in at the Mathom House (33.4S, 75.6W) in Michel Devling for Mathom Society faction. Another Shire-based faction is the Inn League, housed at the Bird and Baby Inn in Michel Delving. Quests for the Inn League are only available during seasonal festivals, and send you all over Middle-earth on drinking related missions. Visit the Party Tree north of Hobbiton to get started.
A special game mechanic first introduced in The Shire is Session Play. While this is used later on to let you experience the epic story first hand, here in The Shire you get to experience Middle-earth as a chicken. Yes, a chicken. There are a number of quests that send you all over the world as a level 1 chicken, in constant danger of being eaten. These adventures can reward destiny points, the Cloak of the Cluck and the Crosser of Roads title, a true badge of dedication to running like a chicken. Visit Sandson's Farm to try it out.
