Content by Level Chart

Revised for Update 2

Update 2 is bringing a number of content changes, including:
  • Evedim has been revamped, adjusting the levels of the quest hubs and Annuminas instances.
  • Four new level 65 group instances and one 12-man raid were added to the Enedwaith Quest Pack.
  • The Battle of Moria instances in epic Volume 2, Book 5 were converted to skirmishes.

This chart provides a quick comparison of the quests, instances and raids included in each zone, in level order, grouped by content pack.

Zone Quests and Deeds: The XP you earn from completing Zone Quests is often the fastest way to level in LOTRO. Zone Deeds are the primary source of Turbine Points earned in-game.
Skirmishes offer some nice gear rewards, and enough XP to provide a nice change of pace from questing. The level 55+ skirmishes are unlocked by completing chapters of the epic story.
Instances have quests, reputation bonuses and good loot but require a group of 3 or 6 players.
Raids reward some of the best gear in the game, but require a group of 12 players. One raid, Helegrod: Dragon Wing, requires 24 players.
Public Dungeons: A few quests lead to public dungeons, but their real attractions are reputation item drops and plentiful mobs for grinding deeds and XP.

Are instances and raids available to free players or do I have to first unlock the zone that they are located in with turbine points?

Lunatuna said...

You need to unlock the zone they are located in. For example, the Angmar Quest Pack includes quests and deeds for Angmar, plus the Urugarth, Carn Dum and Barad Gularan instances and The Rift raid.

When you reach the minimum level for an instance, it will be added to your Instance Join panel. When you try to create and join the instance, you'll see an Unlock button in the place of Travel Now if you don't own the associated Quest Pack.

Also, the 3 Great Barrow instances are Free without any unlocks. See the green section at the top of the chart? That's the Free content. It includes The Great Barrow instance cluster, the long orange line. Each of the 3 Great Barrow instances require a 6-man group. Using instance scaling you can dial the level of the mobs from low 20s all the way up to 65. As a Free player you are capped at level 50, but it's perfectly possible (and fun) to run GB in a level 50 group.

Did they really make the Bree Dungeon Level 20? That's a big change!

Tawariel said...

Yep! The reputation quests for Haudh Iarchith have been lowered too. It's possible to get to Kindred with Bree by your mid-20s now. Good for Free players, since the Return To Bree skill unlocked at kindred provides yet another way to get around (swift travel is limited to subscribers).

Auch, the game's a lot more limited for free players than I had hoped for. But nevertheless thanks for the reply and the awesome chart!

I'd like to point out LL is quite unlockable at 25 with your first characters earned points if you don't spend them on something else first :) Beta prices pending (Crell, F2P beta player)

Ajay said...

I agree with Crell, Lone Lands is entirely possible to get using just one character. Not sure if you want to include these as "skirmishes," but the tutorial skirmishes (2 of them) are free as well but not repeatable.

Lunatuna said...

Jon, you are quite correct. Any of the VIP/purchase separately or expansions content can by unlocked with Turbine Points earned in-game or purchased in the LOTRO Store. It may take some serious grinding to get it all for free, but it can be done.

Lunatuna said...

I wouldn't call the skirmish tutorial "skirmishes" and more than I would call the game tutorial an "instance". Let's leave that to Turbine marketing. /wink

Lets say I unlock Lonelands or any other zone and I'll get access to new zone deeds. Now the question is, will I still get turbine points as rewards for completing those deeds? I was thinking of getting Evendim - seems like worth the turbine points. Just wondering if I'll get TP from unlocked deeds.

Lunatuna said...

Yes, you will get TP from completing deeds in the unlocked zones. Be sure to see our How to Earn Turbine Points article for all sources of TP. Using the Beta values as an example (subject to change before launch), Evendim costs 750, but you can recoup up to 225 TP in the zone. Some of that comes from level 50 deeds in the outside area of Annuminas though.

@Crell
Yes, it is technicaly possible to get 600 TP on your first character in the starter areas - I did it as well, and wasnt able to buy anything whatsoever or i wouldnt have had enough TP.
But it was an experience I never want to go through again - not having swift travel alone nearly made me quit, let alone the lack of bag/vault space and no AH slots.
I got to lvl27 by grinding the mobs for the deeds and was on gray quests at the end, and spending hours waiting on a CD to fill the 1/10th of a class deed your allowed daily.
And that was with the assistance of a helpful kin and extensive experience of the game, i shudder to think what a real new f2P experience will be like.

If I unlock the Lone Lands what does that mean? Are the quests unlocked for that character currently logged in, for all characters on that server, or all characters on my account?

Tawariel said...

You'd pay some amount of TP in the store for the Lone-lands content pack. Thereafter you'd have access to Lone-lands for all characters on that account, regardless of which server they are on.

So if I buy Mines of Moria to become VIP and then back to Premium, do I lose access to the North Downs, Lone Lands, etc?

Or are those areas VIP or Store only?

Lunatuna said...

Those are VIP or purchase separately (see the grey bar along the left edge?)

Joze you are a real idiot aren't you? Its not a public pool... they have to make money somehow and they have more than doubled there income after making it free to play, i started free to play and became VIP. But judging by the way you type, your likely 14 and want everything handed to you on a silver platter (thus why you like wow so much, WoW is like Fisher-Price my first MMO easy)

@Anonymous - ROFL!! Very good point man. I love how LoTRO feels hard sometimes, it really drives away the WoW kiddos and leaves the community more mature and enjoyable. My only fear is that the LUA support brings too many add-ons that might leave the game too easy like WoW... anyway, let's enjoy while we can =)

Lone Lands is now free for all

Wish the chart was downloadable like some of your guides. Would be handy to have at my fingertips.

How do we buy the Mirkwood skirmishes?
Is it available after completing the book? and how much is it in Lotro Store?

Lunatuna said...

Great question. I've yet to find anyone who knows the answer. For sure, they are available to complete the book. The unanswered question is whether you have to buy them after that.

Of note, I've found these to be some of the fastest to run at level 65.

That is a great chart.

Nice update. I wonder though: I bought Evendim recently, not knowing about the update. Should I hurry and play through it, or wait for the update? How profound the changes are? Will I miss something by waiting?

Lunatuna said...

The update launches tomorrow. From what I've seen of the zone (I haven't played through it yet), the leveling experience has been smoothed. I think it will be worth the wait.

Endless said...

@Lunatuna - thanks for a quick reply. I'm looking forward to the changes. :-)

Does anyone know if the 3 instances of 2.5.5 will be skirmishes? If so, will completing each skirmish count towards the completion of the 2.5.5 quest? Hopefully someone noticed this in the testing prior to release. Thanks!

Ajay said...

The battle instances have been converted to skirmishes and will count towards your epic quest progression!

JVegas said...

Thanks Ajay. I tried the Deep-Way last night and confirmed that it counts towards the Epic Quest. Awesome!
