Updated for the November Update
Looking for more Turbine Points, without spending real life money? In this article we’ll look at the specific ways to earn TP in-game, how much you can earn in the free “starter” zones and what you can do if you need more.

Earning Enough for Your First Purchases
One common concern is earning enough for the riding skill and first quest pack before the free content runs dry. With the November Update, the Lone-lands Quest Pack is now included in the free content. This means you can get to level 34 or so before needing to purchase a quest pack.Below is a list of TP that is possible (although challenging) to earn in the free zones with a level 34 character. As you can see, this will give you plenty for the Riding Skill (95 TP) and your first quest pack, especially if you wait for a sale.
| TP | Description | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 150 | The Shire Zone Deeds | |
| 130 | Ered Luin Zone Deeds | |
| 255 | Bree-land Zone Deeds | Including Haudh Iarchith deeds |

| 40 | Level 30 Gift Box | 10 TP per quest |

More Ways to Get More
Doing all the deeds available to level 25 is just one way to earn TP. Here are some others:- Subscribe for a month. This may seems counter to the Play-for-Free philosophy, but subscribing for a month lets you keep many per-character unlocks that'd you otherwise finding yourself grinding TP for, like inventory bags, trait slots, auction house slots, gold cap removal, and the quested Basic Riding skill. When your subscription lapses you keep these on all characters that unlocked them while you were a subscriber. Your account will be downgraded to Premium status, so take note: new characters created after the downgrade will subject to Premium limits. As an added benefit, subscribers get 500 TP per month in addition to what they earn in-game.
- Buy some TP in the LOTRO Store. If you are on a Free account, your first purchase will upgrade you to a Premium account. Zing! You now have 3 character slots, 5 auction house sell slots, a higher gold limit and a higher login priority. Plus some annoying chat, mail and trade limits are gone.
- Level an alt. The TP on your account is shared between characters, so the TP you earn on your alt can be used by your main character. If you are short on character slots, you can earn TP with a character on another server. Note that while this seems possible based on Turbine statements, it can’t be verified in Beta.
- Higher level players will want to stare at their deed logs for low-hanging TP fruit just waiting to be plucked, especially low-level or nearly-complete deeds.
- While there are no retroactive points granted for deeds completed prior to F2P launch, there are some new reputation deeds have been added. If you've already met the reputation requirements the new deeds autocomplete when you log in your characters after F2P launch and you'll receive any rewards, including TP, automatically.

Hmm, here's a question. Now, I used to play a long while back, but stopped playing. If I come back to free to play, I am assuredly above the level that the free content covers, but not at the level cap. I've already completed most of the starter content, Lone Lands, and a good portion of the North Downs, and possibly some more, though I forget now. Will these TP awards be retroactive for all the deeds I have already completed, or am I out of luck?
Turbine has said several times now that Turbine Points will not be awarded retroactively. The logic is that the XP rewards from deeds was replaced with TP, so for any deed you've completed you've already received a reward.
If you at one point subscribed (not free trial) then you are automatically upgraded to premium when f2p releases as well, so you will be able to have the 3 character slots and an easier time grinding out tp with those characters.
Also note that if it is like DDO (Dungeons and Dragons Online) then you will be able to grind out TP with a character, delete them and grind it out again ad nauseum.
As I noted above the DDO scenario can't be tested in LOTRO F2P Beta. Turbine has stated that Turbine Points for LOTRO are "per subscription", but that was in response to a very specific question about having two subscriptions on one billing account. I don't see that precluding a per server implementation, but I don't claim to know either way.
It is not so much 'challenging', i.e difficult, as it is actually just really boring and time-consuming.
Unfortunately many people will quit before making it, and since they were so bored why on earth should they pay in the hope it gets better?
You can get 10 points once per server by making a new toon on that server. If you make a dwarf, for example, choose skip tutorial or whatever it is, you pop up in ferrin's court. Walk 5 steps to dwalin (I think) to get the "every little bit helps" quest. Get 10 points. Log out, repeat for each server.
To the post with the 10 points once per server thing...
Couldnt you just delete and remake the toon and keep doing that?
It's only available once per server. If you do it once, it won't be offered to another character on that server... even one with the same name.
Clever Turbine! :O
They may have to rethink that pork chopper deed. I did it 3x last night, never had done it on any of my (6 high level) characters. Very nice.
I am thinking a VIP at least can set up a "tp factory" with a buddy. Make a new toon, run thru the 7 kills (30 min or so?), repeat. If there is no min level for it (??). Even a F2P player could do it, thanks to the free scroll of travel unlock and horse they give you, but you would have to level up a tiny bit first (level 5?).
Good luck killing (or even getting to) the boar in Angmar with a level 5 character - even the normally friendly guard NPC's in Aughaire will kill you at that level.
There appears to be a minimum level for the Pork Chopper deed. We tested last night and a level 40 could finish, but a level 35 could not. We add the requirements once we nail them down.
Does it give 50 TP still?
Yes!
Thanks for the update. I was of course going to use a captain buddy or other VIP possible travel to get to the higher level boars, but if there is a level cap over level 10 its not worth it. Thanks for saving me the test, guess I will wrap it up on my remaining characters and call it good -- still 300 points I didnt have.
Anyone tested kindred busting? For example, go to loth, kill a critter to get busted down a level, then do a daily to get your kindred back? That give TP every single time??
Well, there was a flaw in our early testing (i.e., we missed a pig!). I was able to complete Boar-slayer on a level 8 toon tonight.
I don't think it's easily farmable, though. Even as a VIP the travel for the lowbie took quite a while since no stable points were learned yet. If you have captain help it's probably a little~ faster. Esteldin is the closest allowed summon spot for a toon that low; between Est and the Angmar pig the text below the mini map was red to him: no summons, and no local reviving/rezzing.
What about hunter ports?
Hunter to esteldin is the same, you cannot port to aughaire and I don't think there is a significantly closer campfire (???).
Yep, the level restrictions apply equally to captain summons and hunter ports. Esteldin is the closest.
I set up a new toon on the server but I couldn't find the skip tutorial option anywhere. Mind letting me know where is it? Or do I have to finish the intro quest first to get the 10 TP? Thanks in advance
The "Skip new user tutorial" checkbox is right above the "Create" button on the character creation screen. This lets you skip the "tutorial" where you practice swinging a weapon and interacting with objects and NPCs. You'll still need to do the "introduction" (Archet for men and hobbits or Frerin's Court for elves and dwarves), which is good! That's were you'll find the once per server quest that gives you 10 TP.
You adjusted the costs for LL & ND above, but failed to adjust the fact that ND is purchasable @25 with the above calculations (595<650) :)
Fixed!
Yesterday's discount: LongLand QuestPack only needs 280TP! Yes!
What are those Gift Box Quests and how do I aquire them?
For any new character you created after the F2P launch, you'll get a gift box at certain levels. The first one comes in the mail after you've completed the introduction. The levels of the gift boxes are: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40 and so on. Only gift boxes of levels 20, 30 and 40 contain the TP quests.
OK, thank you for the clarification :)
As a VIP getting 5500 points spoiled me for the future as I squandered most of them (thinking that was the monthly amount). Dummy! I haven't played for a few days so I'm not sure when the monthly allotment arrvies. Just fyi.
You get your monthly allotment on your billing date. So let's say I'm on a 3 month sub with a billing date of the first of the month (I am!). I'll see my monthly pointly around the first of the month, give or take a few days. You can check your billing date at http://myaccount.turbine.com
Points even! My fingers betrayed me when I typed "pointly" :)
Once I started my VIP time from SoA key, it took 3 days for the monthly TP (500 TP) to show up on my account.
I found a (sorta) quick way to make TP. I'm not sure if its really worth it or not, but here goes...
1) Start a Dwarf character, skip the intro.
2) Do all the intro quests as quickly as possible (takes me about 30 minutes).
3) Once you hit level 5 from the intro quests, open up the box and get the horse wistle.
4) Using the horse whistle, complete all of the exploration deeds in EL and the Shire, Lands of the Dwarves, Scouting the Dourhands, Elf Ruins, Farms of the Shire, and Sights of the Shire, skipping over points where its too tough for a level 5-6 to get to easily (Rath Teraig).
All in all, with just the exploration, this can net you 25TP in 1 hour time. If you want, quickly go back and do the Wolf slayer in the shire and the Goblin slayer and Wolf in EL for 15 more TP, but this will significantly raise the total time.
I will keep experimenting with quick TP farming, but this is the easiest repeatable TP I have found so far. If anybody has found faster. Let me know. :)
I did some testing on TP grinding, and the best area is the Man starting zone. Here's my times so far:
Intro: 30m (human/hobbit intro is faster than elf/dwarf)
Bree-Land: Questsx2, Spider/Brigand Slayer x2, Dunedain: 60m, 60 TP
Shire: Questsx1, Wolf Slayer x2, Farms/Places/Quick-Post: 60m, 40 TP
EL (Dwarf): Questsx1, Goblin/Brigand Slayer x2,Places/Scouting: 70m, 50 TP
EL (Elf): (haven't tested, not good except for wolf slayer deed)
Obviously, if you have uninterrupted time, it's better to do all of these in sequence than start a new character from scratch, but using that 24hour horse (and the deed accelerators) is key. If someone wants, I suppose I could post my detailed notes. (Champion is best, IMO, but needs crafted swords.)
That matches my best rates of about 50 TP per hour.
Some combination of the ideas needs to be tried:
Man race, do *something* to get to level 15 that earns TP (slayer deeds), then hit the barrow downs to get the 3 in one TP series of wisdom virtue (10, pages off wights), 15 (both wight slayers) and 10 again (racial wight slayer). Wight slaying is a good time to burn your deed acceleration scrolls.
Killing those things at 15 may be rough for a new player, but youll get the hang of it and dying does not matter anyway apart from wasted time.
The trouble with the explore deeds is they do not level you. Killing 90 spiders/wolf/orcs/gobs/etc levels you and goes quickly once you learn the game, if you pick your disposable character to be a DPS class (hunter really is awesome for this).
I am working on a repeatable series that ends with that wight slayer deed, trying to reduce the time and increase the TP output. I will post something in a couple of weeks after I have tweaked it some more but others can help develop this.
Well, if you're going to run a toon all the way to 15, then wights are a great choice, but that's pretty far, time-wise.
My recommendation (not optimal, but okay) is to do the Intro, then start in the Shire and do QP + Farms + Places...you're forced to walk for all the QP quests anyway, so you don't have to pop your horse whistle yet. Once that's done, you'll have gained a level or two, and be better positioned to start with Slayer stuff. (FWIW, goblins near TG are the easiest Slayer deed...start at borrom of mtn, kill to top, drop down, repeat.)
so, can anyone write here how is easier to earn TP. Im 30 lvl and have 430tp but its not enought for questpack. If ill start the same race\hero on another server, will i get these points?
Yes, points you earn on other servers all go into a single per-account TP balance. And that's exactly what the comments just about yours are talking about. Quickest ways to earn TP as a new character.
crap i missed out on these tips. i already have a lvl21 & 18 toons as f2p so is it possible to go to the other servers and re-do all the stuff that gives tp without me having to delete one of my toons or buy a char slot. are the tips above only possible for newly created toons? keep up the good work guys. excellent site & info.
Kill 90 spiders/orcs/wolves/gobs? I've been killing all these even after my slayer indicator showed completed 60/60 but I never got the tp or w/e the reward is for 90. I know I've killed way more than 90 wolves if not the others but I still didn't get any notification or reward for it. What am I doing wrong?
Definitely roll TP grinding alts on other servers. There is a once-per-server quest offered in the Intro that gives you 10TP in Part 1 to spend in Part 2 of the same quest. Just don't do Part 2 and you're up 10 TP. Times 15 servers, this is 150 TP.
As for not getting credit for completing slayer deeds, I'd try logging in and out again... could be lag. You should definitely be getting credit for completing deeds in Ered Luin, The Shire and Breeland.
Finally for you TP grinding types, consider doing 30 quests in Ered Luin for 35TP. Focus on the quests that are clustered together and skip the rest.
For me it's:
~ roll a dwarf or elf on a new server
~ intro w/per-server quest (30 min, 10 TP)
~ 30 quests in Ered Luin (60 min, 35 TP) This also gives a good start on slayer deeds, plus the levels to finish them quickly.
~ EL wolf/goblin/brigand slayer; exploration deeds (45 min, 55 TP)
~ Shire wolf/goblin/brigand slayer; exploration deeds (60 min, 55 TP)
~ Breeland spider/brigand/orc slayer; exploration deeds (75 min, 55 TP)
Total 210 TP 4.5 hours (about the same as any method that pays 50 TP per hour)
Could I use the same name on all of the servers when creating a new alt? Could I send items via mail on my new alts on any server?
You cant send mail to any char that's not on the same server.
Luna, some slayer deeds require a min level. If you are fiesty, you can kill mobs that you cannot get credit for, although its rare. Moria is one of the worst places for this, many of the deeds start at 50+ so an enterprising player misses many moria deeds by going in early and will have to backtrack. I am not sure how awesome you would have to be to do that at low level, I think you would have to be geting high level help in a higher level zone (like a level 5 doing angmar or something) to have this issue.
50 TP per hour seems to be a hard limit to break. You can do it with slayer accleration scrolls that are provided by the gift boxes. Its a good idea to do a lot on each character that you create. That intro eats a lot of time, and if you just do a few things before delete and re-roll, that wasted time adds up fast. I would almost say do every 90 mob slayer deed before rerolling.
Quick question: Do you have to damage a creature for it to be counted on your slayer deed? What I mean is...if I'm grouped with another account that is higher level, and have the guy i'm trying to get points for in his group, and set on follow...will he still earn towards the slayer deeds?.
Hehe, to the person wondering about 90 kills for deeds: 90 = 30 + 60. There are two deeds: the first (30 kills) gives 5 TP, the second (60) gives 10. Once you're a slayer, you're done!
Quick answer: You have to be pretty close to the kill for it to count, but you don't have to deal damage.
If you're in a fellowship (raid doesn't count), then all you need to do is be within a 75-80 meter radius of the mob for it to count. The mini-map is approximately 65 meters in radius as a reference.
Does anyone know if there is a map somewhere that would work well for TP farming....as in...shows best location for slayer deeds, and has exploration places all marked? If not I think someone should make one...I would, but I'm not that great at stuff like that most the time.

Sort of.
http://www.arda-online.com/map
Its not what you asked for, but if you use it WITH other resources, such as the web, you can make a lot of progress. For example, you read on the web that warg slayer in the misty mountains is a deed you could work on, and that all the wargs are at caldwell pool. Great, you say, where the heck is that...??!! This map tells you.
Or, if your deed log says that if you could only discover the lornspan in the lonelands, you would be done, but you cannot find it? Use this map!
Happy hunting!
Can I buy points for LOTRO on a card in a store??? I know that there were DDO cards, but I am unsure about LOTRO. I would like to buy Turbine Points for my LOTRO account, but I dont use credit cards for games like that. Please help!!!
GameStop is supposed to be carrying points card for LOTRO soon (Sapience said "in a few weeks" on September 20th), though I haven't seen a report of them actually arriving yet.
Another alternative is to buy points (or subscription) with a Visa Gift Card. See this thread for more key info: http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?321597-Visa-Gift-cards
Sorry, just to clarify your comment about how subscribing for a month will allow you to keep the upgrades, does that mean if I subscribe then drop down to Premium i get to keep the 5 inventory bag perks and whatnot, or only specific upgrades?
Lone-lands Quest Pack now only cast 50 TP, it's unfair! I bought it for 280 TP. When is LOTRO going to reduce the price of other quest packs?
Seriously, Turbine should add this site's link to LOTRO homepage. It's really useful and more importantly newbie friendly. I learned a lot things even before logging game once!
I am familiar with TP farming. In DDO i usually did 100 honor (25 tp) farm and re-roll char thing. But it seems it's a lot slower in LOTRO. Well, at least for me. Deeds take a lot time especially slayer ones. Anyone have suggestion about how to speed up things such as class or items?
(Sorry for bad English)
i made a vip acount is this give me any tp point ? and if so how i get them thanks
As a VIP, you get 500 TP per month, onyour billing date, give or take a few days. You can check your billing date at http://myaccount.turbine.com
Thanks! Lunatuna , you are so kind! I love ur site, so much!
Make sure your account type is VIP on your character selection screen. Some keys could have problems. Currently, my Moria key did not activate correctly for the VIP time but gave me all the perks of Moria correctly. I will be calling Turbine tomorrow to correct this hopefully!
Purchasing Moria will not make you VIP, only give you the expansion with all new classes, quests, instances, etc...
To become a VIP you must subscribe.
Incorrect, if it has 30 days of game time, it will make you VIP. Read the F2P FAQ by Victorie for details.
Ajay, did you have any luck calling Turbine? I have also bought Moria but the key only seems to have made me a premium member, no sign of 30 days as VIP.
It might be worth mentioning that it's possible to earn 10 TP once per server for doing the Man/Hobbit quest given in the Archet Intro by Jon. Quite repetive, but as of this posting I've gotten 150 TP (minus 10 TP for spending it on my home sever).
After getting it on your home server, it stays unlocked, and you can still get 140 TP from accepting and handing in Part 1 of it once on on each of the other servers.
I'm thinking the quickest way to earn TP will be in a kin or other group using a combination of trash and high-level characters to maximize gains for the most people. At 65 most of the slayer deeds in the starter regions are one basic ranged attack per kill. A 65 Hunter + a (Champ/Warden/LM) could quickly take 4 'trash' characters from point to point and average 75-100 per hour per character if a good progression is established(taking advantage of Hobbit enmity for another 10-20 since wolves/spiders feature in a lot of slayer seems beneficial).
The real question is whether the gains are worth churning towards 20 or if it's better to do as much as you can from exiting starter area until the good slayer deeds are done and then reset. There's likely a sweet spot due to the time it takes to complete the starter area, such that you don't want to reset too early but you obviously don't want to grind until 25.
I'll do some research into this with my sister, who's a F2P, once my Warden hits cap.
@Al Yup, I call them up, and they fixed it up for me without any trouble. The rep even credited my account 500 TP immediately instead of having to wait 4 days to see it.
What i do i play 4 characters anyway so i can try out 4 different races and 4 classes and as a bonus i get enough TP to get all quest packs and maybe even expansion.
What exactly must you do for the Boar-Slayer deed? I gather there is a specific creature(s) to kill . . . where can it/they be found?
Also, I did not know the 10 TP was per-server . . . I thought it was per account. Thanks!
http://lotro.mmorsel.com/p/tpfinder.html?soc=Eriador&tab=1
Basically kill 1 boar in those regions. It is a hidden deed, so won't show up.
I think its nice and all for free players, what i think should be looked at since now, after paying into game since its release, i drop down to premium and get all the limitations, then someone can just download it for free, pay one month or buy some TP and get the same status and limitations i have. I think there should be some differences for those who invested money into the game versus those who just payed a month or put ten bucks in points on account. I think premium accounts who were extended supscribers or had expansions before this f2p came along should at the least not have to buy quest packs, or some kind of tp bonus for money invested. just my opinion.
Pork-Chopper
http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?277926-Pork-Chopper
is all the deeds earning TP repeatable (except for the 10tp starter quest)? for example:
1. create a new char, do all the bree-land deeds
2. on the same server, repeat step 1.
works?
Yes, TP are assign to the account and you can collect same deeds rewards from multiple char on one or even several servers.
With the November update, Lone-Lands is free.

The above site seems to have blatantly stolen your content.
Yeah, I removed the link. More importantly, they were running ads to "monetize" the content, something we consciously decided not to do.
Just stop already. Same guy (presumably) pimping the same article.
Having tried the new dwarf/elf Intro, I think it's quicker to create new toons in Archet.
I use two accounts to earn TP, one of which has a lvl 41 hunter. I'll create a toon and have them meet my hunter in Thorin's Hall. Here's the exact sequence I use, be glad to hear any suggestions. For the most part, assume that my temp toon is following my hunter.
1) Grab the 3 explores in TH and have the temp toon set TH as home.
2) Travel down to Nogolond for the 4th Dwarf Explore. Visit the two brigand sites just North of Gondoman. Swing through Gondoman to get the last Dwarf Explore.
3) Go down to the goblin encampment, getting the 90 slayer deed for goblins and the 5 explore sites. Go to the spider cave in the Southern Barricade and get the 90 spider deed.
4) When finished, leave the goblin encampment and go to the Wardspire to start your Elf-ruins deed.
5) Travel down to Kheledûl (Dourhand city) to complete the scouting the dourhands deed, get the brigand 90 kill deed, and about 20 kills towards the hendroval deed.
6) When finished, run out and opposite Thrasi's Lodge kill the remaining hendroval to get the 30 kill deed.
7) Travel down to Celondim, getting the remaining 4 elf-ruin explores done.
(Your temp toon should now be lvl 9.)
Time to head to the Shire. I have my hunter port, but Celondim is right down the hill from the last explore, so you could go Swift to Michel Delving.
8) At MD, go grab the South Fields explore to start Farms of the Shire and head towards Hobbiton, taking a brief detour at Waymeet to grab Dora's farm.
9) At Hobbiton, go past the intersection of the East road with the Hobbiton/Tuckburough road. Rather than turning left and going down to Hobbiton, keep on the road until you see the Methel-stage. Run through the stage to start your Sights of the Shire deed, then keep on going South to tag the Great Willow. Now you can get back on the road and head to Hobbiton.
10) Go through Hobbiton, taking a detour to get the Party Tree and Appleton, then continue on to Brockenborings.
11) Head just North of Brockenborings and get your 90 goblin kill deed in the goblin camp there. Your temp toon should have hit level 10.
12) Head to Scary. Have your temp toon use one of his two Lesser Deed tomes. Kill the spiders in the Quarry for your 90 kill deed.
13) You should have enough time on your Tome to go south to the Bridgefields Wall and Puddifoot's Farm to kill wolves for your 90 wolf deed.
14) I usually have 2-3 minutes left on the Tome, so I'll head for the Yale-Height and kill as many there and around as I can.
15) When the Tome wears off, I'll head over to grab the Stocktower and Bamfurlong. I'll then head to Old Odo's farm, use the remaining Tome and kill brigands there, then head back along the road to the bandit camp and get the 90 bandit deed. With the time remaining on my Tome, I'll head back to the Vale Height and finish the harvest-fly 90 deed.
16) I have my temp toon map back to TH and drop off the swift travel token and bonus xp device into my Shared Storage in the Vault that's just inside TH.
Total time for me is usually around 2 hours + tutorial time, total TP is 150.
Boar Slayer gave 10 TP 09/12/10 on European server
You can purchase tp with ultimate game cards and they're pretty easy to earn on survey websites.
http://www.prizerebel.com/index.php?r=131305
I was under the impression Ultimate card no longer work for LOTRO. Can anyone else confirm?
So what, in everyone's opinion, should be the priority for TP spending on a FTP account out of the following? Riding skill, Gold cap removal, quest packs, expansion packs, trait slot unlocks, anything else I'm forgetting.
Unlocking all the extra stuff (Gold cap, Trait slots, extra bags and swift travel) can be accomplished simply by subscribing for one month. This is worth A LOT of TP. (495 per bag, 95 per trait slot, 495 for Gold Cap and no way to unlock Swift Travel permanent and 500TP for the month of subscription) So that leaves the quest packs and expansion packs to buy, mainly.
All items that come from the starter gift boxes will now be bound to account..... (From Patch Notes - November 2010). Now those useful items such as lesser Deed acceleration can't be found in AH anymore. : (

(1) If you want to play the game seriously, you're almost going to have to subscribe at some point (and not just for a month). Unless you want to spend an insane amount of time grinding for TP.
(2) Houma's point is a very good one, but if you absolutely CAN'T subscribe even for a month, I'd say:
(a) Riding skill,
(b) quest packs,
(c) trait slot unlocks
And everything else a distant fourth. With the recent patch, you don't necessarily need the expansions - some of the expansion content is now free, and the rest can be purchased as quest packs.
I just got the complete expansion packs with moria & angmar in it. Which quest zone contents can't I access now that i'm vip for a month? Also, from what i've read on this site, the painted skeleton horse is very rare; so is it worth buying from the store. If I can only buy either the skely horse or the steed of night w/c of the 2 do you guys suggest?
I would suggest neither horse, they're only 6% faster than the horse you get at lvl 20 (or earlier if you buy the riding skill) and you'll have many chances to get the faster horses later on. Save that TP for something else.
For the duration of your VIP you have access to ALL zone content (now that Mirkwood and Moria have gone to quest packs instead of expansions). After that month is up, if you choose to not subscribe again you will have access to Bree/Ered Luin/Shire/Lonelands and whatever you can unlock in the TP store as well as being able to finish all your deeds and quests that are currently active in other zones.
The Moria expansion, the physical disc purchased outside the LOTRO store, contains several quest packs, I believe, plus classes and 2 char slots. Downgrading to premium would still leave those unlocked.
I just hit level 36 so which zones should I go to grab all the quests before my 1mo. vip expires? You said that I'll have acccess to ALL zones for the duration of my vip; should I go to lothlorien and get the quests there? Is my lvl even able to get quests there?
You have to be within 5 levels of the quest to be able to accept it, and there are often pre-req quests. Check out the great leveling guides on this site to find content for your level.
The one month subscription seems to be the way to go just to unlock the gold cap, riding quest, trait slots, and bag slots. But I've got an incredibly stupid question - with the bag slots unlocked, does that include actual bags? If not, where do you get the bags to fill the slots? Quests, in-game money, or TP?
For the most recent Anonymous:
The two extra bags unlock automatically when you log in on a V.I.P. subscription. You don't need to do anything to get them other than log in. You can instantly carry more stuff.
This is the path I took in order to pay the last amount of money possible.
I first started raising 2 characters up to level 20 and BOUGHT the riding skill for both of them at 95tp (had ample enough accumulated already). My logic went this way: why should I subscribe now when I can survive with 3 bags and a relatively small amount of virtue slots? I think this served me well.
I kept on playing until I reached the Lone-lands. By that time the november patch came in and I was able to play it for free. I had bought, in the meantime, a factory-wrapped Moria collector's expansion.
Upon finishing Lone-lands, I used the 1month vip code inside the box to play North Downs and most skirmishes available at my level. My month is just about up and I'm relatively finished with the North Downs, polishing up to lvl 41 in Evendim.
Thanks to the subscription and to playing 2 characters, I have enough TP left to buy the Angmar quest pack when my subscription goes off. This, along with some skirmishing, should get me to lvl 50; at that point, the moria expansion (which came bundled with the free month of subscription), will kick in and take me to lvl 60. Glancing at the TP finder tool, I can easily speculate that I will have enough TP to buy Mirkwood at that time, without spending any RL cash.
My tips thus: wait until you're finishing lone-lands to subscribe and just learn to live with 3 bags and next-to-no virtues.
Total money paid: less than 20$.
Grinding done: Zero, except for the wargs in Lonelands to get the Bree-port.
Great plan, closely mirrors my own. I do try to watch for sales in the LOTRO store, eg 49TP for riding skill. One request to Turbine: allow VIPs to purchase quest packs so we can catch sales. I understand they hide things so we don't try to buy what we already have access to. But when you revert to premium there could be a long wait for a sale on the zone you want.
Have made it to level 34 so far for $0. Just started tasks in the Trollshaws killing white, yellow and orange mobs. Still need to finish some quests and many incomplete deeds. Have made enough gold thru the game (even with the 2G cap) to acquire all purple items (weapons, armor & jewelery) thru the AH. Level 35 is the next big one for me to equip some better purple items (already bought).
I also will get one month of VIP in the future (if no additional free content is available in an upcoming patch) but so far I've only pretty much used TP for additional trait slots and the riding skill early when the price dropped. Have used gold to max out additional storage space as much as possible (reason I bought a house) and sell items often. (Figured I'll wait for removal of the gold cap, gain extra storage, receive AH sell spaces, etc. once I have exhausted all the free content Turbine so generously provided). Not exactly sure at what level this will inevitably occur.
Since North Downs seems pretty similar to Lone-Lands (in terms of the overall level range) I think I would use my VIP status to jump to an even higher level area questing. Would probably move up faster and would be more challenging (even if I miss out on some content).
Poll: Anyone else pay $0 so far and what level are you?
North Downs has ALOT more content than LL does, just letting you know.
Thanks fellow Anon for the heads up - is it mostly at the higher levels though in ND? When you're higher, doing lower level quests does not boost you that much (not to mention the quests being too simple) and I foresee using my first limited future VIP time to move up faster in a higher zone with more challenge - just my particular style though. I just went to Misty Mtns. for the first time yesterday and can easily kill the first few red mobs encountered there (@ level 34 solo) with no additional buffs. May try some red bears tonite. (I used to avoid red mobs heeding the advice on LOTRO sites).
I'm one of those that does not mind the inevitable grinding, especially if it's coupled with tasks or working to complete deeds. If I avg. 150+ XP with each kill, it adds up pretty fast on regions with lots of mobs. And the resulting silver from selling is nice too for better purple gear.
I like to read what others game plans are and compare. My primary goal is to stay free as long as is reasonably possible and see what level I can get to. This should give me plenty of time to weigh options for the first region to unlock quests in, once I'm VIP.
Cheers!
I'm level 25 and have paid $0. I'm sitting on a little over 500 TP with a Lone Lands deeds left to do and I actually went back to do Ered Luin. I'm not really sure what to spend all of the points on though. Gold cap, auction, storage, more quest packs, trait slots... ridiculous number of options. Has anyone devised an optimal order to buy things in?
I apologize to those who have commented before me, but I'm throwing another question out there. Hopefully much simpler. I like to skirmish, I really do. But I do so solo. I do everything solo. I have a lot of things that can pull my attention away from the game at any second. So I really like Trouble in Tuckborough because I can go afk at almost any time without it having a detrimental effect (aside from mid-combat obviously). Siege of Gondamon is the exact opposite. You have to be at the keyboard and attentive the entire time or you die/fail. So on to my question. What, if any, purchasable skirmishes will allow me to walk away at times like Tuckborough does?
Thanks in advance!
Any skirmish which involves attacking rather than defending, Thievery and Mischief is the other lower level one.
@Spaz_OL: Thievery and Mischief (level 30) is also an "offense" type skirmish, where you set the pace, as are a number of the skirmishes introduced with Mirkwood (level 60+). Of note, these can also be the fastest to complete because you set the pace.
As to the question of optimal order to purchase things, there isn't one per se, because you want to take care of Turbine sales as much as possible to perserve TP. If you are planning to subscribe for a month as many have suggested, focus on content (quest packs and skirmishes). Also the riding skill is a good buy unless you are about to subscribe (VIPs can quest it at 20) - you'll save a ton of time not having to walk everywhere.
As for purchases with in-game coin, a house with a chest is an excellent buy. This gives each of your characters an additional port to the housing instance and the chest is effectively shared storage. Vault upgrades are another great way to stay under the gold cap.
I have played lotro for 3 weeks and i played 2 character both are level 34 now without spending a single penny. I have finish all the deeds from ered luin, the shire, bree land and lone lands. I have already remove currency cap, riding skill for both my toon, unlock evendim and enough tp to purchase angmar. I have enough income pay for the subcription but I'm from Philippines and there is no store selling lotro or TP here. I guess I will just stick to grinding Tp, because there is no way I can upgrade my account I just hope the f2p will last forever. Anyway this site have teach me a lot and thank you so much for sharing those info.
I've heard that if you have a credit card with a Visa logo and international calling, you MAY be able to subscribe by calling Account Management at 781=407-4020, Monday - Friday from 12:00pm to 8:45 pm EST. I can't guarantee this will work, but various posts on the forums seem to indicate it works in some cases.
This won't help you, but for players in United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand, you can buy game time via PayByCash (http://www.paybycash.com/lotro/codelist.php).
From the "subscribe now" page, you only have the option to subscribe from those countries.
But if you log into your account, in the My account tab, you can update your credit card info with all the avaliable countries open. After you do that, you just go to the suscribe now page and your CC is there for you to select.
Tip: Don't use the level 20 Gift Box item for "A Plea from Trestlebridge" until AFTER you complete the level 30 Gift Box quest "Message from the Rangers of Esteldin." Completing the level 20 Trestlebridge quest makes you ineligible for the level 30 Esteldin quest, but not vice versa. I have tested this workaround and successfully collected the TP for both quests.
Too late for 4 of my 5 characters unfortunately.
I had a pretty large discussion about this on Bullroarer forums. That's also the consensus too. If we wait for level 30 and then do Esteldin followed by Trestlebridge, you can finish both.
I think it would be a good idea to update the TP Finder tool with the festivals. You can earn a lot of TP in the Yule Festival for example.
Since it's a seasonal thing, perhaps it would be better to have a Festival guide that gets updated each festival with the new things added.
But that's a good amount of work, and from other comments, the owners of the site are a bit busy.
So far made it to level 38 for $0. Twice as many tasks now each day helps a little, but soon the gold cap level will hold me back from buying better gear. Storage is a little tight but not too bad (yet). Really miss not having AH slots to sell things at a better price - have to settle for what little the vendors pay. Need to wait for the possibility of more free content (for quicker XP) or switch from using TP for slots to unlock quests (future sale?!) in Misty Mountains/Angmar (or of course become VIP for a month).
So the inevitable slowdown for free players has started for me @38. Additional TP accumulation will be tougher/slower going now - anyone else hit "the wall" yet like me?
Using the 1 month of VIP (bought Moria off of Amazon) and all my characters on a single server, I am easily making enough TP to cover zone costs. In fact, all I have left are Forochel, Eregion, Mirkwood and Enedwaith, and Forochel is within spitting distance.
With just 2 characters limited to LL I can see running out in the very next zone you buy, but if you split out to multiple servers you can earn enough TP, just takes a bit longer.
made it to level 45 without paying for anything
i just had 1 character and i just finished every deed that i see that appears on deed log .forunately, lonelands is already free when i started so i had no problem there
also got the evendim sale
I have a question. When I complete a killing deed on a server, make a new character and do it again, do I get the TP again?
Yes
And then if you want to earn even more you can create a character on another server and gain even more tp
There is only one limitation though: the day has only 24 hours ;-)
@ewsome game just got 1k points
Any way to exchange turbine point with gold? in form of code or gift in lore shop? Just like the way in Runes of Magic online?
Nope, there is no conversion from in-game gold to TP or TP to in-game gold.
i cant find the race when i try to start a new player can anyone help not sure whats wrong
I have a question that hasn't been answered in these comment's, I'm planning to grind those TP points to purchase those quest packs, however, the quest pack applies to only the character that bought it or once bought is it avalaible to all characters in my account?
(let's say i buy North downs, will all my other toons be able to quest there?)
Quest packs are account wide. Every char on every server has access to them.
All quest packs are account wide purchases. Currently (Jan 19th) there's a link on the front page under dev tracker (http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?&postid=5187210#post5187210) about the Mirkwood and Loth QP describing them as account wide purchases. This is the same for all quest packs, and you can purchase them from the character select screen.
Sweet baby Jésus! This site has invigorated me to play LOTRO yet again! Before, I thought that F2P ends when I finished everyting in Bree (Started from Edhelion), so I just gave up at around lvl 25. But this new TP grinding GMH! =D :D =D
Thank you all for such great info! I read everything on this page, including the bottom licensing! :D
holy shit , i read all the coments in 30 min :)) , even tho english is not my mother-language :D ty for the info .. let's get griding
Hey since skirmises are on sale this weekend, I'm a lvl 26, should I buy Amon sul skirmish or keep saving fornorth downs, since I heard that Amon sul is a crappy skirmish. Also, I never got a box in the mail when I got lvl 20
The trouble with Amon Sul is the NPC you assist in the skirmish kills many of the mobs, stealing the portion of your XP that come from mob skill. You still get the XP reward from the daily quest.
That said, skirmishes in general don't help you produce more TP to buy more content, like a quest pack would. For that reason, we recommend you focus on quest packs first.
Finally, check your bank box for your level 20 gift box. Each time you open a gift box, you get the next gift box in addition to the other goodies. Also, only characters created after F2P launch get gift boxes.
The game is unfortunately all about how cheaply you can progress to a higher level, rather than actually playing the game as it was meant to be enjoyed in full, unless you pay for a subscription. Okay, with a lot of hard work one might be-able to progress quite highly without paying anything, but is constantly struggling to work around all the frustrating and complex barrs to avoid paying really that enjoyable? I think not as the restrictions will become so frustrating that nearly everyone will either give up or concede to paying once they've got past the early stages (very similar to a free trial). Also on LOTRO you will be stuck playing in a very limited size world where only a considerable amount of money will unlock the vast majority of the game (again unless you pay monthly). It's in my opinion not a genuine free game as to enjoy it properly you must pay and paying monthly is by far the best value. The free part is really no better than a free trial since the further you progress, the more you need to pay to enjoy the game until it becomes virtually impossible to continue without paying. Unfortunately this is similar to virtually all so called free MMORPGs unless you're playing a free trial which is many ways is better since you often get unrestricted access to the game for the trial period. The only totally free MMORPGs I've come across have absolutely dire graphics (E.g. 2D graphics or even text) and they look so dated that no-one will pay anyway, but I'd be interested to know if anyone has come across any exceptions.
Anyway, this is the best guide I've seen if you're determined to progress as far as possible in LOTRO without paying for by paying as little as possible, but in my opinion, if you really enjoy the early stages of the game it's worth paying for a monthly subscription where you'll get access to everything unrestricted which is how the game is truly meant to be played.
I think you're rather naive if you think a game like LotRO could survive as an entirely free game. Its not a coincidence that all the totally free MMOs have terrible graphics, its because building detailed 3D worlds costs lots and lots of money.
I've been F2P on LotRO for about a week now and I think its absolutely superior to the free trial period offer used by the likes of WoW. You can get nearly halfway to the level cap without spending any money at all, giving me lots of time to decide if I want to stick with the game for a bit. If I do, I'll probably subscribe for a month or two to unlock some more features. Then, and this is the crucial difference from WoW, I can drop my subscription and still play the game, albeit with some restrictions.
I forget if there is a Crafter leveing TP reward -- Farming in shire is relatively easy (cheap) maybe not timewise except for doing the riskless repeat activity while watching a tv show...
No, at this point you can't earn TP via crafting.
I still havent found the way to bypass the tutorial when creating a new TP Scrounger Char (doing the 'one time per server' 10TP with a dwarf at Ferrin's Court) It wasnt horribly long but would get real old doing it 12 more times.
Didnt you only get that option (skip tutorial) after you already went thru it once -- which wont be the case if you are attempting it on one of the 15 servers you nevere had a char on previously ??
I did one TP Scrounger dwarf thru to 10th level doing some of the kill 30/60 deeds, but that was quite tedious (but showed that I could go back to my real chars on the one server and do those skipped deeds alot easier/faster at 24/15th levels)
I will try the exploration deed method next and hopefully get close(r) to the 300 more TP I need for the North Downs set.
The only way to bypass the Tutorial is to be a subscriber. There is no way to bypass the introduction instance.
You can skip introduction, but not the tutorial
You don't need to subscribe to skip the tutorial. You only need to have Premium access.
^ /Confirmed.
I made it to lvl 57 without paying anything and i have north downs, evendim, angmar, eregion, trollshaws and money cap removal and a few class and legendary trait slots. I have not yet had the need of farming tp, because when you complete most of the deeds when leveling your characters, you will get enough tp to buy all you want.
wow, get ready for a lot of these
Please do not leave referral links on this thread. They will be deleted.
Just started playing LoTRO a week ago, i have restarted a lot, and playing is fun but it seems like as i am getting higher in the levels my time is becoming shorter. I found that i went from easy quests in bree to quests that were wrote in red, thus making them to hard for me to pheasably complete. I used my turbine points to buy myself a virtue slot but idk if its really worth the wait. And for the TP point grindig, maybe a spammable skill? Like the minstrels noob heal spell, cast it 1000 times, at 1.5 second recharge and 3 second cast, thats 4.5x1000 which is 75 minutes... seems boring for 10 tp's or so...
Anonymous, not sure how you are jumping to red quests so quickly. Depending on where you start, you want to finish your beginner areas first. For Elves/Dwarves, it is Ered Luin. For Hobbits, it is the Shire and possibly Bree-land. For Men, it is Bree-land. There's a pretty logical progression within each zone. For example, for Men, you will go from Archet to Combe to Bree town.
As for your TP complaints, yes, there are class skills with pretty high requirements for their deeds. Those class skills are meant to be completed while you level or group. The more reasonable way to earn TP is to complete deeds within the various regions of Middle Earth. Each region, such as Bree, has quest completion deeds (complete 15, 30, and 45 quests, etc.), slayer deeds (slay x number of mobs), and exploration deeds (find x number of locations or items). You can even visit regions that are below your level and finish all of the deeds in that region. Of course, you won't be progressing your character most likely, but you'll earn a good amount of TP. Refer to the TP finder here on this website on how much each zone will provide.
If you get bored playing one class, restart or create a new character, and repeat the process.
I've unlocked all quest packs and both expansions without paying directly for TP. It is very much possible and quite amazing how much content is available for FREE.
are all the epic quests free? is there slayer deeds for the lonelands? if there are they aren't showing in my deed book. if this helps i'm a level 30 hunter.
As far as I know, the epic quests should be available to Free players, as long as you meet the level requirements for the quests themselves. As for slayer deeds in the Lone Lands, there definitely are some. It appears, Anonymous, you know how to access your deed log. Once your deed log is open, there are a few tabs for certain types of deeds at the top of the log. You'll want to select the Eriador tab. Once you've selected the Eriador tab, you should be able to see several buttons at the bottom of the deed log window. These may not be very obvious to begin with, but each button represents a zone in Eriador. Keep clicking through them until you see Lone Lands (may be the 5th or 6th button, just guessing). Your uncompleted deeds should appear. There's a checkbox that allows you to view your completed deeds within that region too. This is all assuming you have indeed done some questing and slaying in Lone Lands.
If you leveled past Lone-lands before it was free content, you might want to go back and kill a few things (orcs, goblins, etc) to see if it opens up the slayer deeds.
I stopped playing in mid-November last year and am ready to come back to play. I am a F@P player and started after it was introduced. I bought the expansion mostly to get the 1 free month and get a premium acct for the month now I am back to the next level with all the cool stuff that followed. My question is...what has really changed in the 5 months or so since i played last? Any new content or areas open to F2P players, anything significant changed? Just curious if anything new has been added for us to play in this time.
Thanks!
i'am tired from grinding and deeds turbine unlocked everything even the simple things like the sending mails or transaction and even the stock of money i realy turbine make some changes
