Updated for Update 2
Update 2 is bringing three important changes to classic instances:
- The starting level for the Annuminas instances will be lowered to 40.
- Radiance will be removed from the game, effectively removing the radiance requirements for The Vile Maw, Dar Nargubud and Barad Guldur.
- Five new instances will be added to Eriador, including a new 12-man raid. See the Update 2 New Instances Dev Diary for more information.
About Classic Instances
LOTRO offers many fun and challenging instances and raids for groups of 3, 6, 12 and 24 players. Via the Classic Join panel, you are able to join these instances from almost anywhere in Middle-earth, just like skirmishes. The table below shows the minimum level to enter an instance via Classic Join, and for scalable instances, the max level. Note that for scalable instances you will receive both skirmish and instance marks that can be exchanged at the Classic vendor in skirmish camps for some pretty awesome rewards.

Despite GA being a "level 32" set of instances, I would do them at a higher level. I remember, with a somewhat balanced group and on-level characters, we couldn't finish the Fortress. At that time, didn't even look into doing the other instances. With 3 level 40+ and upper 30s and lower 40s fellowship for Fortress, all of the instances were easily do-able, plus their challenge modes. It seems real hard to do it at the minimum level or slightly above it.
GA arboretum and barrows can be done with 4 people. Definitely possible at lvl 32 if you know what you are doing. Fortress might be a bit more tricky.
The small fellow instances were only 3 man when we tried them in beta. I don't know if this was intended or not. I will check this to see how it is atm, if I remember that is!
I confirmed that I couldn't start GA small fellow instances with 4 in my fellowship.
I'm not surprised. I could see doing the six man instance with four, but getting four players into a three man instance would be a bug. If so, it seems to fixed now. Thanks for the confirmation Ajay!
I'm rather curious why it has been a 4 man in live for quite a while it seems. At level, I could see a 3 man (especially if you went for challenge mode) being exceptionally difficult. The difference between 3-man and 4-man may not seem like a lot, but one more person makes it a lot easier. I'm hoping a dev comes around and confirms which way it is intended to be.
I saw a chart from Dev in Beta forum that shows Dungeons of Dol Guldur not as Small Fellowship but as Fellowship instance.
Can't check this because my toon on test is low level one.
Just checked in beta. The Instance Join dialog is locked at "Small Fellowship" for Dungeons. Most folks on this thread (http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?t=350905) think it's a typo, I agree.
I came upon some daily "crafting" instances in Moria recently. They wouldn't fit being located here in this list of classic instances, but perhaps it is worth listing those and their locations? I can help out with the ones I've discovered and may even check a few out that are around my level. I'm rather curious if these would be worth doing to gather resources, since I can never seem to find much iron in Moria!
The crafting instances although useful, are not a patch on what you can farm once you enter Lothlorien, you cant walk around that place without falling over metal/wood etc.
The crafting instances are useful for gathering resources, but don't overlook their value as sources of XP and cash. Running all six crafting instances will produce a fair chunk of XP (depending on your level) and close to a gold in just ordinary cash drops and you can do all six in less than a couple of hours.
I might add, the crafting instances are also a reliable way to farm 6 Lothlorien Gold Leaves per day which can be a great way to get barter items in Caras Galadhon. One such item is the LI damge type scroll that gives a weapon Beleriand damage + tier 3 Orc-Slayer - a very good damage scroll.
Easy. The crafting instances are in 3 locations. If you enter redhorn lodes from the way of the smiths, take a right and run to the wall, then take a left and run to the far southern wall, and you are there. Thw scholar instance is found between 21 hall and chamber of crossroads. The wood instance is found just south of 21 hall, near the orc camp and near the zone change into first hall --- easy is south out of 21, take a left, fall off the end of the hallway, go south, its *right there*.
These reset every 3 days. They come in pairs of 2 instances, one with lower level (ilex, k-copper, etc) mats and one higher level (k-iron, mallorn, etc). You can do them daily but the NODES reset on a 3 day timer, the other 2 days of the week is for other things like leaves or item xp etc.
Bel/orc is great, but I would strongly recommend a better balanced item like bel/dead or western/orc for general purpose usage, unless all you do is whack orcs.
So, had a chat with a player that has not purchases Moria or Mirkwood (only done the epics in them). Apparently, Lothlorien quest pack provides:
Moria: Dar Narbugud
Moria: The Mirror-halls of Lumul-nar
Moria: The Water Wheels - Nala-dum
Moria: Halls of Crafting
purchased* what I get for typing fast!
I also think there is a chance that the Moria class quests are not able to be finished if you don't have access to the instance. It could be that the quest itself gives you one free ride into the instance, but I have not confirmed this yet.
My friend also had one of the Mirkwood skirmishes tied to the epic show up on his skirmish list, but he is not certain if that skirmish will disappear once he has completed the quest objectives.
Updated for the change to quest packs.
It would be great to confirmation on the two questions Ajay raised from players with accounts in the right state.
Confirmation that someone who doesn't own Moria expansion or QP will NOT be able to finish their Moria class quest to obtain one of their legendary traits. My hunter friend decided to finish up the class quest chain in Moria and finally got to the point where he needed a boss in Grand Stairs. Unfortunately, he cannot enter it, even through the NPC at the camp in front of the Grand Stairs who gives the quest.
However, I do not know if the instance pool would work or not? I imagine it would not, since it is a classic instance?
Nice updates :) however, I've heard that the new 65 instances will all require enedwaith QP, and not the QP by location. here's a post by sapience that says so: http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?381273-Content-gating&p=5225222#post5225222
Nice link (holy backpedal!). Table above is fixed.
Might want to mention somewhere that you must have discovered the entrance to these new instances (completing a deed for each one) before being able to run the instances.
It's in the footnote.
Aha! Oops :P
"Angmar: Barad Gularan BG[4] 6-man VIP or Angmar QP" should be BG[5] now that you've renumbered the footnotes.
Fixed!
hey guys,i am not vip ,but i owen enedwaith QP,but to get the instances u need to complete the deed,so when i try to do the relics in trollshaws( i dont owen) it ask me to unlock (buy it),whats the deal with that please?
Not to worry. MadeofLions has said you do not need to complete the Mysterious Relics deed (which teased us with the instance locations) to do the In Their Absence quest arc or the new instances. All you need for those is the Enedwaith Quest Pack. The Mysterious Relics deed will be unfinishable for you until you get the Trollshaws Quest Pack or until they change the deed.
I think it was their intention early on to have the instances be part of the zones they are in, but they decided to make them all part of Enedwaith.
I think the choice of making them tied to Enedwaith makes sense. Enedwaith is part of the level cap content, and all the new instances require level 65.
