Choosing the Best LOTRO Account Type for You

LOTRO Ford of Bruinen
With the launch of Free-to-Play you can now play Lord of the Rings Online for free. The option to subscribe for a monthly fee is still there (now called VIP), and there’s a new middle-ground account type called Premium.

Each account type has some content and perks included, with more you can buy from the LOTRO Store. VIPs get the best perks and the most content, including a few options that are completely unavailable to Free and Premium players. But is being a subscriber really better? Not necessarily. It really comes down to what you want to do in the game.

"I just want to check out LOTRO"

You should start as a Free account. There are a few limits to chat and trading, but they really aren’t bad at all. And there are plenty of quests and deeds to carry you to level 25. You can also craft, fish, play music, buy a house, use cosmetics, skirmish and more. There’s even a cluster of instances available to Free players. If you find you like LOTRO enough to keep going, read on to learn the various ways you can unlock more of the game.

"I want to PvMP"

Player-vs-Monster-Player is LOTRO’s version of PVP. This one has an easy answer: you must subscribe to play either as a “creep” (monster) or a “freep” (hero of the Free Peoples).

"I want all the VIP Perks"

Again, this is an easy choice: you must subscribe. The VIP perks can be quite helpful, especially if you are actively leveling a character. These include:
  • Access to quests and deeds in all content 1-50
  • Swift travel
  • Access to PVMP
  • Rest XP (200% XP from mob kills)
  • Able to buy perks with Destiny Points (note, the same perks can be bought in the store with TP)
  • 500 Turbine Points per month
  • No caps on gold, traits, chat or mail
  • 30 "sell" slots on the AH
  • Able to quest the Basic Riding skill rather than buy it in the store

"I want to play through the whole PVE game as cheaply as possible"

Here’s where the road forks, depending on which parts of LOTRO you are most interested in, and your willingness to grind for TP - or crack open your wallet.

100% free! I really can’t (or don’t want to) spend a penny
It’s definitely possible to gather enough TP in-game to unlock most of the PVE content in LOTRO. Be prepared for a lot of grinding, however. Most TP is earned by completing deeds (see How to Earn Turbine Points for details). You will likely have to complete the same deeds on several characters to unlock every zone and expansion. Some folks will go this route, but many will find in too tedious.

I’m an Altoholic
If you don’t plan to level your alts past 20 or 25, there’s nothing stopping you making as many alts as you'd like with multiple Free accounts. If you plan to level them up or do a lot of crafting, the "Subscribe for one month" tactic described later in this article can save you some money in the long run.

I just want to skirmish
LOTRO Skirmish Camp
Folks who prefer skirmishing to questing will want to save up their TP to buy a few skirmish packs in the store so that you have access to them forever on all characters and servers.

If you can bear to crack open your wallet, the Moria and Mirkwood expansion packs allow you to raise the rank cap on your soldier, soldier skills and personal skirmish skills. Mirkwood also includes six more high-level skirmishes you can quest to unlock. Be sure to check game retailers: retail box versions still work, and there are some great deals around that are a lot cheaper than buying the expansions with TP from the LOTRO Store.

I want to do end-game raiding
Level 65 raiders need excellent traits and skills to be effective in raids. True, you can buy some traits and stats in the store using real money, but that's a super expensive approach. The more frugal approach is to subscribe for at least a month (see below) to unlock all your per-character trait slots as well as the deeds that reward the traits you'll need.

The "Subscribe for a Month" Tactic (Free-to-VIP-to-Premium)

Subscribing for a month - either with cash or a 30-day code - can be a great deal. If you time it right, you can score permanent, per-character unlocks plus temporary access to subscriber perks and a lot of content that will make leveling a lot easier (and more fun).

But don't subscribe right away! Timing is important if you want to get the most out of your VIP time. Folks who like this tactic use a Free account to get two characters to the right level to take advantage of the unlocks they want most, and then subscribe. When your subscription lapses, your account status automatically downgrades from VIP to Premium. As a Premium you'll end up 3 character slots (one more than a Free account), so consider creating a third character while you are still a VIP to snag some of those tasty unlocks for it, too.

In general, we recommend you wait until your characters are at least level 20 to subscribe. Some people will want to do this right at 20 to get the Basic Riding skill for their alts, while other will prefer to wait until 35 or so to have access to all the quests and deeds in that tough level 35 to 43 range.

Has there been any further clarification on trait slots when you downgrade to Premium, since Sapience's tweet?

Anonymous said...

The basic riding skill price has been lowered to 195 tp.

Anonymous said...

I've subscribed for 3 months. After its over I'll probably go premium. Wondering what purchases would be "optimal" after the time is up with the primary criteria being content. (one time use items/scrolls and other fluff should be ignored).

An an example, its silly to buy the Warden class if you subsequently buy the MoM expansion.

Tawariel said...

The Basic Riding Skill cost seems to be moving around a lot at the moment. It was 236 for the first few days (20%) off, then 295 when I checked it again on September 16th. Today they lowered the cost, together with a bunch of other items.

http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?&postid=4979146#post4979146

I'll go through and fix Basic Riding Skill cost in the article, but be sure to double check in-game as these costs are always subject to change!

Desperate Houseboy said...

As I've posted on LotRO official forum, Sapience's tweet was very (intentionally) VAGUE and just wrong. You get to use each trait slot (or you could say "unlock" in a pre-f2p term) as you level up higher regardless of your account type. As a non-vip, however, you must pay for them to use (or you could also say "unlock" in a post-f2p sense) them.

So where is he wrong? My account is premium and I have some characters I used to play before the game went f2p. There're one lv21, one lv18, and one lv17. Since F2P went live, I've raised each of them up to lv25 (from 21, thus unlocking 1 virtue, 1 race, and 1 class slots), and lv19 (from 18 and 17, unlocking 1 race slot). ALL OF THEM can use the newly unlocked trait slots without paying.

This is confirmed as of yesterday.

Tawariel said...

Thanks for the confirmation, Desparate. I'll update the article to reflect your info.

Posted this on the buzz, but here it is as well.

Hmm, the bit about crafting guild access, I think it is a one-time purchase per character per guild. For example, as a Free to Play, you cannot go beyond Acquaintance and become a Friend with the crafting guild. If you buy the crafting guild access in the store, you will have no restrictions. It was a one-time purchase in beta, don't believe it is for every reputation level. If you become a VIP and downgrade to Premium, whichever tier you are on you can progress, but you cannot advance (go up in reputation level). This downgrade bit is assuming the F2P FAQ is accurate. Essentially, the only way to skip paying for crafting guild access is to reach Kindred during VIP. That would take a good bit of time commitment, so I really don't see any serious non-subscribers going that route.

Regarding AH slots, my post in the F2P discussion has confirmed that any Premium account, no matter how you got Premium, will get 5 AH slots.

Maybe the crafting guild stuff changed recently, but that's how it worked in beta.

Jon Andrist said...

Think that crafting guild is per-guild/per-account So..if I want a bunch of kindred crafting guild tailors, just buy craft guild access:tailor once.

Lunatuna said...

Jon, you could be right, though it's an edge case for a player to have two guilded tailors, or another other single profession, on the same account. Have you tested this?

Jon Andrist said...

No, I haven't. I'd check if I had high enough level characters, or room to go run the beta client, but what I recall is that it was 'uses:account' like quest packs. Worth checking..

Ajay said...

Ah, true, could be per account! I need to look at the store's description.

Anonymous said...

excellent info for us pure f2p players. keep up the good work.

Anonymous said...

cool riding skill is on sale today for only 48 tp's!

Anonymous said...

No Ettenmoors for f2p? That's the stupidest thing I ever heard! How are f2p peeps supposed to get hooked on the moors if they can't even see what they're missing? There aren't enough ppl that go into the moors as it is... now it seems lotro is doomed to end up as a pve only game. Like any other zone it should have a TP cost to unlock it.

Lunatuna said...

Turbine has said they have plans to make PvMP available to free and premium accounts in the future, which could involve a TP unlock. Remember you need to be level 65 to be effective as a Freep in the Moors, leaving Creep as the only option for most free/premium account players. Since free players now outnumber VIPs by approximately 3 to 1, I think they made the right decision for the short term for maintaining a semblance of creep/freep balance.

Anonymous said...

I am glad they locked the moors at first. PVP often attracts a certain type of individual and mentality which would put the great community of LOTRO at risk (not all pvp players, just the loud minority of them, which is all it takes to ruin the game). It should eventually be unlockable by TP, account wide unlock but only unlockable at player character level 65 (or current max level) (so the person has to have actually played the game in order to pvp).

Lunatuna said...

I don't know, I've met a lot of great people in PvMP. Conversely, the folks who go out of their way to ruin other people's fun seem to do it with equal gusto in PvE. I don't know how Turbine plans to introduce PvMP to Free and Premium players, but pricing is one tool at their disposal. Perhaps the zone unlock as the Freep cost way less TP than the unlock as a Creep.

Anonymous said...

Absolutely you meet good folks in PVMP. They are part of the community. I was simply saying that if the game makes it easy to get for the free to play folks, it will *attract* the less savory pvp players, the type that want to nerf/change the classes every week, the type that corpse camp, have names like pwnurazz, follow you around spamming duel requests, etc. It needs to be difficult to unlock to avoid attracting hordes of types of players that plague pvp oriented games or even hybrid games like wow. At the extreme end of the spectrum, I would quit LOTRO in a flash if the sorts of folks I see in modern warfare start playing in bulk... (I quit MW for this very reason, the attitude of other players).

A good compromise would be to make PVMP part of the mirkwood bundle, maybe.

Regarding auction slots, in this page its stated that Premium have 5 slots but in the faq it says we lose it..

"D14. Auctions (VIP to Premium)
If you downgrade to Premium from VIP you will lose your auction slots. However, any auctions currently in those slots will stay up until they expire or are purchased. After which they will be returned as normal or the game money sent as normal."

Lunatuna said...

I have a Premium account that used to be a sub that I let lapse before the F2P launch. The characters on this account have 5 AH post slots. I wonder if this limitation applies only to Free > VIP > Premium accounts.

I'll update the article to reflect the FAQ, but I would LOVE to here from Free > VIP > Premium players and hear how many post slots they are actually have in game.

Lunatuna said...

On further reflection, I believe what you lose are the extra 25 sell slots you get as a VIP. I don't know anyone who is Premium who doesn't have 5 sell slots. Do you?

Jamie Walker said...

As a premium, I have five slots - I started the game last week, and got the 5 slots when I bought my first allotment of Turbine points - so yup, the Premium is 5AH slots.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the clarification. I didnt yet make the move f2p-vip-premium so i had that doubt.

TD said...

WOW! So it is true. I am currently f2p. In a few months I want to go Viper. But it is nice to have it confirmed that if I do downgrade my Viper status that I will end up premium and not back to f2p.

Love your site here. You have a lot of content here that a (fairly new) newbie like my self can learn from.

Thanks

Can someone clarify something for me, please? I am playing on a new account on the f2p version. If I bought a MoM expansion pack, say from amazon, would that work with the f2p version and unlock all the stuff for me?

Thanks.

Anonymous said...

MOM expansion pack stuff WILL work with the current f2p game. It'll unlock the stuff it always has (areas, classes, etc.) plus you get 30 days VIP. You'd have to go to myaccount.turbine.com to activate the key from the box.

Great, thanks for your response :)

Before you buy any version of Mines of Moria retail box, double check with the reseller that you are (1) getting the right version (North America or EU) and (2) that it comes with 30 days of playtime.

Anonymous said...

How about accumulated rest XP? Does that bluish bar suddenly vanish after the VIP-to-Premium lapse, or do you get to exhaust what's left?

Lunatuna said...

You can earn rest XP and accelerated XP from Destiny Points while a VIP and use it up after you downgrade to Premium.

Anonymous said...

Rested xp goes rather fast, while the cooldown is rather slow. The first time, when you can buy 5 at once, its a LOT of rested xp. After that, at one use per day, its gone in a flash. I do not see a way to horde it up for use later.

If you have a lot of DP, use the out of combat regen buff so you have less downtime when fighting. Its as good, or better, than food. Most of the rest is rubbish, but at lower levels a morale bonus can be nice, and if raiding (???) you could get a hope bonus, or other minor things. Out of combat run is nice at times but does not seem to stack with other items or class skills.

Hey if i buy MoM for like 10 bucks with the 1 month vip and i already have 3 characters in my vault will those 3 characters get there traits ah slots unlock when i activate my MoM key or do i need to make 3 new character? And if so once my 1 month is over if theese 3 character i have wil lreatian all the unlock bag traits slots at premium? Or do i need to make 3 new character during VIP to hold on to the trait bahs ah stuff?

Ajay said...

If you log onto your current characters and new ones at least once, they will all have all bags, traits (even ones you haven't reached the level requirement for), and currency cap unlocked. I'm not really sure what you mean by bag traits. As for Auction House stuff, you will be able to keep your current auctions when you downgrade, but after that, you only have 5 slots per character. You can buy more via the LOTRO store.

Anonymous said...

Anyone knows about the the Anon. above?? I am about to buy the MoM from an online shop as well.

Anonymous said...

hmm ok how about the level cap will any character i do after the vip month will have a level cap?? And 5 inventory bags?

Ajay said...
This comment has been removed by the author.
Ajay said...

Assuming your VIP month is from Moria, your level cap will be 60. The new update this month will probably remove any level caps though. Currently, you would need Moria to reach 60 and Siege of Mirkwood to reach 65. One of my characters reached 50, and since I don't have Moria activated yet, I could not progress any further.

Anonymous said...

Found a copy of "Complete Moria" pack. Has Moria and SoA. States "Free 14 day trial online" on the Moria "box". Not 30 days. Would this give VIP status for 30 days? 14 days? or since it is a "trial" would it give no VIP status?

Would the SoA disk/key give 30 VIP status or none?

In theory, shouldn't there be 30 day VIP status for each disk/key?

Have read a couple of debates about what Turbine is doing with pricing/marketing and just thought I would mention that they have just started this week advertising on MYSPACE music sites which seemed to coincide with price drop in the first expansion pack a new player would need to get. And the prizes for boxed versions of any or the expansion games has shot up on online retailers like Amazon.

Begining player here and have to say your site is extremely informative and helpful and I am sure it will continue to be as I learn the game. Thanks for your time and efforts.

Ajay said...

I'm not exactly sure what type of Moria you have. I'm assuming you bought the "Complete Edition." The Complete Edition has buddy keys, which are essentially trial keys, but can only be applied if you are going to create an account. These keys would give you 14 days of VIP, but then you would be back to Free status, instead of Premium. The Complete Edition of Moria normally contains 30 days of VIP, but if the box doesn't indicate that, then I would not take it for granted. I would greatly encourage you to confirm beforehand that it contains 30 days of play time, otherwise, you will miss out on the VIP to Premium downgrade benefits, which save you a lot of TP.

I don't quite understand why you are asking about a SoA key. The Complete Edition provides you with a Moria key only. If you bought SoA separately and it has a 30 day key, then you can apply your SoA key first for VIP time. Afterwards, you could also apply your Moria key if you have one. The way the keys work is that you can only "upgrade" your account with them. For example, Free -> SoA VIP -> Premium -> Moria VIP -> Premium with Moria would work fine. However, Free -> Moria VIP -> Premium with Moria -> SoA VIP -> Premium with Moria would NOT work because SoA VIP is a downgrade from your Premium account with Moria.

In the end, you will want 30 days of VIP time either from a SoA box or Moria box. The downgrade benefits from VIP to Premium only work from those types of keys, not from the trial key.

Nifty trick: Use a buddy key from a Moria retail box to add LotRO to an existing Turbine account that already has Premium status in DDO, and you automatically get Premium status in LotRO! (This is handy if you know someone else who has a Moria box and is willing to give you a buddy key, or if you want to wait and register your Moria product key after you run out of free content to get the most benefit out of it.)

Regarding character slots Ive seen that buying MoM will get you +2 character slots then being vip you get +2more character slots so 7 all up.Once that VIP is over will it be only 5 slots in the end ???? or 3 (Im a premium member)

Lunatuna said...

It's also possible to buy slots in the Store.

Think of it this way. You lose 2 slots when you downgrade from VIP to Premium.

Anonymous said...

So after MoM Vip I get 5 character slots as a premimum? instead of just 3 being a normal prmimum?

Anonymous said...

Let say I unlock MoM game time card on my account and having only one character at it is right now, Do i need to make my new characters (created witihn the 1 month vip) up to a certain lvl so they retain the bags, traits etc after or do I just need to go to the first mission or do i have to finish the intro? to get them unlock.I am aware that ill be missing out on the horse riding skill but I just want the traits and bags unlock for all of the characters

Gabe said...

@Anonymous - The new character you create inherits the current account status. So if you create a new character while being VIP, it will have 05 bags, etc... when the VIP status expires, that character will still have the 05 bags, etc... If you create a new character after the VIP status expires, it will only have 03 bags, because your account will have Premium status.

So the advice is to become a VIP and create all the characters you think you will enjoy playing with.

I hope it helps. =)

I am playing as a free player right now but considering buying MOM from the ingame store as a way to go up to VIP then down to Premium to at least be able to mail money to myself and the other neat stuff.

Does anybody know if the MOM you can buy from the ingame store makes you go up to VIP with it like a retail code or not? Also why can't I see Mirkwood in the store, only Moria?

Thank you.

Lunatuna said...

Buying the MoM expansion in the LOTRO Store only gives you the content, not the 30 day playtime included in some MoM retail boxes.

Currently on Live, Mirkwood is gated behind Moria, so you won't be given the option to purchase the Mirkwood expansion until you have purchased the Moria expansion.

Currently on Test (Bullroarer), Turbine is working on breaking apart the expansions into quest packs - basically making the content and features available a la cart. If you missed the Veteran's Day sale, you may want to wait to purchase the expansions until after the November Update when you can compare the pricing.

Anonymous said...

I didn't miss it so much as I've been broke for a while and will need to do a lot of Deeds for TP until I get some money to at least go up to Prem for a month. I need to into a game time card for one month to get the unlocks.

All expansion content a la cart or full price for the expansions? Might still be cheaper to just buy the expansions.

Thank you for the info, though. Hmm, gotta think on how to approach this now, knowing their plans.

Anonymous said...

Couple questions about going from VIP to premium and going from 5 char slots to 3: Does it ask you which char you want to keep or drop when you go to premium? Does it give you the option at that time to unlock the extra 2 slots? Are any "dropped" char then deleted or do they remain on your account locked but available to unlock at a later time? Thanks, this is great info site!

Anonymous said...

I think it will ask you which 3 you want active and the other 2 will not be deleted just frozen until you unlock an extra slot. Thats what it did with my 5 original guys i had from years ago.

Anonymous said...

As I understand it, all my premium characters will always have 3 bags even if I do VIP for month. I would have to create new toons during the actual VIP month to get five bags. Is this correct? Also, does Turbine do the lifetime membership anymore? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Ajay said...

As long as you login your characters during your VIP time, you will have all inventory bags, currency cap, and trait slots (even those you haven't unlocked via level) unlocked permanently. So, all of your Premium characters, as long as you log them in during your VIP, will have those 5 inventory bags.

As far as I know, the lifetime membership is currently not being offered.

Houma said...

All bags/traits/gold cap/and now swift travel are unlocked on a per character basis for those characters that you log on ONCE during VIP time.

As a f2p, if you are enjoying the game, it's becoming more and more a really good idea to sub for a single month to unlock these goodies and then keep playing

@Anonymous You should get your 500 TP a few days after becoming VIP. If you do not, I suggest you call Turbine asap and tell them. My Moria VIP time did not activate properly, so I called them up. In addition to fixing my time, the customer rep credited my 500 TP immediately as well.

Hello,

i purchased MoM and got the 30day VIP. Now when i activate MoM and i have the VIP activated, how long do i need to play each (new made) character (2 before VIP and 3 new made) to get the gold and bag caps removed? Just after first login? or after the initial beginner quests? is there a specified time for that?

Thanks in advance

Houma said...

Just a single login on any character during the VIP period adds all the perks.

Just downgraded to premium from my free Moria account - I have access to 5 characters on premium rather then the 3 mentioned. This may have been another change from the November patch, but still - make a 5th character while on Vip to unlock everything rather then stopping at 3 like I did! Made a 4th & 5th character and can play as a standard premium account (3 bags, possible cap and trait lock - still to low to level to test) until I am Vip again - something I'm defn considering down the road.

Ajay said...

You sort of forgot that Moria comes with 2 additional character slots. So, you get the base 3 characters from Premium plus 2 via Moria.

Anonymous said...

Was f2p then purchased MoM expansion and had 30 days VIP, now premium. Now I no longer have free access to Seige of Gondamon and Trouble at Tuckborough skirmishes, only Fornost since purchased North Down quest pack. Any reason I should have lost those skirmishes for my lvl 45 htr?

Ajay said...

When you open up the instance panel, there's two tabs, one for classic instances and another for skirmishes. Make sure you are looking under skirmishes. Gondamon and Tuck are the two free skirmishes you should have.

Anonymous said...

I checked both tabs. The Gondamon and Tuck skirmishes didn't have the pay to unlock, the travel button was just greyed out so I could not click. I will try again tonight as I think I remember before when I try to start one skirmish then cancel and try another it sometimes has delay before it is allowed.

Ajay said...

Where are you starting the skirmishes? I believe you can't start them in housing areas or other instanced areas (haven't checked recently).

Anonymous said...

Ooo, good point. I don't remember, but I did go to my house to hang my new Ivar's Banner, so I may have been in the housing instance. You are right that they do not allow joining skirmishes from instances and that includes housing.

Been reading through some of the comments here, great site for beginners! I know it was explained a little above but I was just wondering if someone could spell out exactly what the benefits are of buying a retail box of MOM (complete edition) I work in retail and it would be really great to know how to specifically explain to my customers why it's worth the $10 or if I should just tell them to do the f2p and not get the box.

Lunatuna said...

The MoM retail box gives you the Mines of Moria expansion (Moria quests & deeds, rank 15 skirmish unlock, Warden & Runekeeper classes, 2 extra character slots) plus a 30 day game code (make sure the version you are selling has one!). For folks who don't have or want to use a credit card to subscribe for a month ($15), the 30 day code is a great way to get those coveted VIP-to-Premium downgrade benefits.

Does VIP automatically get any shared storage space at the vault? If so, is that shared space kept after cancelling the VIP and being downgraded to Premium? If it isn't kept, can one mail items & money to other characters on the same account with a VIP-to-Premium account?

Romh said...

As a VIP to Premium member, VIPs do not get any shared storage, but any shared storage that's purchased is naturally kept when downgraded.

However from what I can tell, it seems that VIP members DO get free wardrobe space, but that space is lost once you're downgraded. I don't know what happens if you buy any extra space while VIP, though. Do you just lose slots, or do you keep it all? Beats me.

Mailing items between your own characters is always perfectly fine, so long as you don't mind the postage.

Houma said...

As long as you have items in the Wardrobe slots they stay there upon downgrade. You can no longer add any new items (recoloring the current items seems like it might work) to the wardrobe but you can keep using the ones there for outfits. If you bought extra space while VIP, you'd have a larger wardrobe that you couldn't add anything to till you exceed the used spaces.

Thanks guys!

another way to get shared storage is to buy a house and add a housing container upgrade. all characters on your account can access the house and container. though the cheapest house that i have seen starts at 5gp, you at least have to be premium to buy it as f2p has a 2 gp cap.

Lunatuna said...

There are small houses available for about 1gp, plus 200 or so silver for a 30 slot house chest. So housing is well in reach of free players.

If you aren't finding any available cheap houses in the Bree housing area, try Thorin's Hall, The Shire or Ered Luin Homesteads.

Does anyone know where to buy MoM for cheap as of now?

Leval said...

If you can find it, Gamestop in the states has the box or collectors edition for $10. It's a bit of a struggle to find one, but if there's one nearby, that's the easiest.

Habs said...

You can buy MoM for 15$ at this site, I live in Canada and couldn't find a retail version anywhere, so I tried this site and it worked great !

http://www.playyet.com

I just got MoM at my local Microcenter. Check their site for avaliblity. Microcenter.com

Anonymous said...

Habs: Does that version of MoM come with 30 days of VIP?

Habs said...

Yes, my code come with a 30 days vip. They send me a scan of the key via email. When you got your key and enter it in your account, turbine ask which your gonna pay your futur "vip month" to complete your purchase of MoM. If your like me and you dont want to, you have to select by gamecard and check the checkbox where its says something like "dont have a gamecard right now".

Anonymous said...

Thanks Habs. I'm gonna give it a shot!

Anonymous said...

Ooops, looks like the playyet site no longer has the MoM. I thought I saw iut there last night.

Habs said...

damn..you're right !! I bought it only a week ago !! I guess turbine push to sell via ingame store

here is a site I have used to buy the upgrade for 3 accounts so far.

http://gametimezone.com/games/lotro.php

MoM was 15$ about a month ago, now its 17$US. I can confirm it comes with the 30 free days of VIP.

I've also since purchased two 60 day game cards for 20$ each, which is also a pretty good deal. Delivery was always within an hour of purchase so no complaints here.

i searched the gamestop site and couldnt find mines of moria expansion-

I have spent money on TP before finally upgrading to VIP, I have multiple quest packs and the MoM expansion and trait slots what happens when my VIP runs out what am I actually losing?

Lunatuna said...

See the VIP-to-Premium Downgrade Chart at the bottom of this article. You won't lose anything you purchased, either by TP or real life money, plus you'll get to keep some VIP-to-Premium perks, like your trait slots.

Lunatuna said...

Please do NOT post referral links here.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the overview. Do you know if in the VIP-to-Premium Downgrade Chart would also be the new (Update 2) home travel via milestone and cosmetic slots included?

Jon Andrist said...

VIPS do not get additional milestone or cosmetic slots free. Thus they are unaffected in your downgrade. If you purchase them, you get them. The milestones are per character, the cosmetic slots are account wide.

When using the key from the retail box of SOA, and then MOM afterword, do all character upgrades (bags, travel, traits.. etc.) apply to existing characters or only to newly created characters? Thanks!

I was wondering if I would be able to add a US Mines of Moria Key to my European VIP account. Any info on this? (EN-WW server: Disasterman(CPT) Catacylsmus(MIN)

Diriom said...

I have a scenario I was hoping someone could shed some light on. I had played the game back at launch long before it went F2P. I have a couple characters on different servers and noticed that since the shift to F2P they all have their trait slots unlocked. Does anyone know if that means I was to get one of these characters to 20 that the riding quest would be available? Thanks for your time and help, love this site!

Jon Andrist said...

@Diriom No. You had do the quest while subscribed. At least riding is cheap when you realize you dont have to buy trait slots for that character!

@Annon2-No. EU servers are owned and maintained by Codemasters while US servers are owned and maintained by Turbine. There is no cross-over with product-keys, or account data.

@Annon1-The benefits are on any characters logged into while VIP.

Diriom said...

@Jon I was thinking as much, thanks again for the quick reply!

If I start a deed, I can finish it when VIP expires right? Will I have access to higher tiers of deeds if I don't start them? For example, if I do the starting tier for a "slayer" deed, but don't finish it until after VIP expires, will I be able to do the advanced deed? Or will I just be able to do the starting tier deed?

Ajay said...

@Anonymous You will be able to finish your current tier but will not get the deed for the next tier. This is assuming that the area the deed is from is a quest pack you currently do not own or is not free.

What is the difference between VIP and Lifetime? I saw on their forum that they could bring out Lifetime option at their anniversary which is next few days but found no info what extra perks there are for buying Lifetime that VIP doesn't have, or are the perks the same?

Oh, and thank you, Lunatuna for the info about the gift cards. That made my day as I did not see that option on the game forum and other options were out for me. Now if only that Lifetime would also show up...

Ajay said...

I don't know how much changing your account to lifetime would cost, but it is basically one lump sum of money upfront for VIP status for life. You won't have to pay a monthly fee. I believe Lunatuna and Tawariel both have lifetime accounts and one of them could give more exact details.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the response, Ajay. From what I could find the cost is about the same as buying a year. It's up to Turbine, though, if they want to play the hold-out game to appease potential customers who want the lifetime instead of just 1 year.

Still don't know if there's a difference in perks. Looks as though Lunatuna hasn't posted here in more than a month. I'll probably just get the lifetime anyway since there's probably no difference in perks since the lifetime is so cheap and it needs to be done if it shows up since time for it is limited.

Anonymous said...

Ouch, just noticed I put too many "since" in one sentence.

Don't drink and post, kids. lol

Lunatuna said...

I see every comment made, but our awesome community usually beats me to the response ;p

And to the person who was asking above, Lifetime = VIP in terms of perks.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for clarifying, Luna. And you are right, it is a great community. I was really surprised to find so much info. I'd say it is because of how passionate the players are about the game, and from the limited time I've spent on it I would have to agree.

Funny thing is I was actually forced to try LOTR because of disgust in finding out about the gross dirty tactics and greed of SONY when trying out EQ2 Extended, which turned out to be a good thing. Anyway, great site. You help alot of people. Hmm..maybe I'll try getting an all-girl fellowship in game if one doesn't exist.

Anonymous said...

For those looking for retail box of MoM I kept checking micro center web site every week until it finally showed up for 10 bucks. I played for free until then.

Anonymous said...

Turbine currently does not offer the lifetime account option. :-(

Anonymous said...

All i would like to know is, if i pay then go f2p, what do i get to keep? does the gold cap drop to 2 or stay at 5 or unlimited prem, vip. what about bag slaots, paid classes like rune keeper, ect?? all info i read is downgrade vip to premium. any answers? thanks

Lunatuna said...

Once you spend real money on anything, whether on a subscription or points, your account will never be less than "premium". So the VIP (subscriber) to premium chart shows exactly what you need to know.

Anonymous said...

i got a f2p account and then migrated.if i buy the mines of moria expansion for eu lotro would it still work if i apply the code to my account, since lotro is now owned by turbine ?,also what level should i apply the moria code,im currently level 34 and my alt is 21

abithirah said...

do you have to get a stable discovered prior to subscription expiry for it's swift travel to stay unlocked after the subscription end ? or is it i can simply create a character and login once during subscription, and even after the subscription ended any newly discovered stable will auto unlock the swift travel for that character ?

Mishu said...

Great guide, bought the original game and expansion back in 2009 and never played since the first week. Was wondering if I would be a premium member and this guide helped me realise I would be! :D
