LOTRO Quick Start Guide

Having trouble getting started with LOTRO Free-to-Play? Here's a short checklist that should get you going!

Step 1: Create an Account

Go to www.lotro.com and take a look at the right panel. You'll either see the Play Free Now or Download Now widget. If you see Download Now, click the "create your Turbine game account" link at the bottom.
  • Fill in the new account form
  • Click the Get Started button (be patient while it processes!)
  • Check your email for confirmation.

Having trouble with this step? Some possible solutions:
  • Do a deep refresh (Ctl-F5). They been fixing the site as they go and you may have an old (bad) one cached.
  • You may have to give it a new email address if your regular one was consumed in a failed attempt. Grab a freebie from mail.google.com or mail.yahoo.com
  • If you have successfully created one account and want to create another, you'll need to clear cookies or use a different browser to see this form again.

Step 2: Download the Client

Once you have successfully created an account the right panel on www.lotro.com should show your download options. If you have a beefy gaming PC, consider the high-res client, otherwise the standard client is fine.

Having trouble with this step?
  • The LOTRO client is a big one. No progressive download here, unfortunately. See below for some suggested reading during the download.
  • Having technical issues with the download? Visit this page for more information.

Step 3: Choose a Server, Class and Race

While the client downloads, you have a great opportunity to read about server, class and race choices, so when you finally face the character creation screen, you'll have some ideas where to start.
Choosing a Server
Choosing a Class, Part 1: Soloing
Choosing a Class, Part 2: Grouping
Winning Race & Class Combos

Step 4: More Reading to Pass the Download Time

This step is optional, but more reading you can do to get ready for your first moments in game. We recommend you print the Quick Start Manual, as the LOTRO website has been slammed and can be slow to respond.

I all ready have a tribune account linked to a premium DDO account. Can't I some how use the same account for LOTR? I have plenty of tribune points and I'm not about to start a second tribune account.

Unfortunately, DDO Turbine Points can't be used in LOTRO.

I believe he was talking about being able to use his turbine account to sign into LOTRO. I am also having this issue and did find one user posted in the forums that he had submitted a ticket with the option of "New Free Account Key Request" in order to get a product key to add to his turbine account. So I'm hoping this will work as it seemed to for the poster. Have no idea how long it will take but is the only way I found so far that might let me add LOTRO F2P onto my existing turbine account.

If someone has found another easier way please post and get it on the forums as well.

Buy one of the boxes from the store for $9.99. Enter the code on your existing turbine account. Now you have that account and it is VIP for 30 days. Which gives you a huge boost in what you have access to just make sure you create and get every character through the intro before the 30 days is done. That way you have access to full 5 bags. The level 20 riding skill quest. And all virtue slots. And 5 character slots as well as access to all classes. Those alone would cost you a ton to purchase in points. So well worth the $9.99. I also think you get a couple of other things but I can't recall off the top of my head.

Well, the price varies by retailer -- sometimes it's less than $9.99, and shipping is a factor too. Also, it's important to note that certain (but not all) boxes will get you extra character slots (must be an expansion, not Shadows of Angmar). Also, not all boxes contain a 30-day play time code - shop carefully! See our "Choosing a LOTRO Account Type" linked in Related Articles above for a more complete explanation of the Subscribe-for-a-Month-then-Downgrade approach.

I just downloaded and installed the game. Is it safe to delete the lotro high res installer files folder that was put on my desktop before I actually did the installation process? It contains the mirkwood setup and .bin files which totals to 10.2GB. I haven't deleted it coz i'm afraid that i might not be able to run lotro if i delete it. There were no instructions that it's safe to delete this folder after installation. so is it safe to delete this folder?

It is safe to delete those files.

Do you have any recommendations for or against plugins? If there are some you recommend, a guide on getting and installing them would be helpful (or link to existing one). Have heard a lot about them but don't know if I should try one (or how). Thanks.

On the character creation screen, in the Select a Race box, you should see a choice for Male or Female, then a choice of four races: Man, Dwarf, Hobbit and Elf.

If you are not seeing the buttons to select a race, you may want to reinstall the game.
