I ran through all of Volume I on the beta on my main character. Once the quests hit the 45-50 range, there was one quest I had a lot of trouble solo'ing.

This part of the epic (Book 13 Chapter 6) requires entering the Dourhand mines in Forochel and finding a Book of Heraldry. Naturally, the book is in the most inconvenient location. For a level 55 (don't remember exactly where I was then), most of the mobs, in groups of 2 or 3 Dourhands were manageable. The problem comes with getting to the quest item. The peikko (snow beasts with annoying skill attacks) and Dourhand combinations that I had to work through to get the quest item were very hard for me (Level 55 Champion) to handle. I had to take on at least 4 enemies at a time, in a very small area. My stuns kept me alive for a little bit, but working to that location the conventional way is very hard. I couldn't handle that many, plus whatever I may have aggro'd by mistake. There's another path to the quest item that involves dropping down a hole. However, you land in the middle of a group of 3 mobs (1 peikko and 2 Dourhands). With the long fall debuff in effect, my ability to avoid damage was severely reduced. In a desperate attempt to get out, I aggro'd about 4 other miners until I found the quest item. The room itself for the quest item contains only 1 or 2 mobs. I died on top of the item, revived, and used my champ horn to buy me time to use the item. I don't consider that soloable. I believe the quest log indicates it is small fellowship, which is more realistic.
Thanks for the feedback and the extra info for folks doing book 13. I updated the language above to be more clear.
Just wanted to add that note about Chapter 13, sure was a toughy for me. I believe Calmirion (lore master) had a problem with crowd controlling the groups as well, but had an easier time with that portion of the epic.
I also recall one point where you had to venture into the Barrows high-level area. The mob (not exactly what I'd classify as a boss though) at the end of that place is only susceptible to Westernesse damage! My Legendary didn't have that title yet, so you can imagine how interesting that was. Pulled out the champ horn, grabbed what I needed, and exited the area!
Didn't mention before, but great glance at Volume I! I am quite pleased with the consistent quality with all of mmorsel's content! :)
Wonderful table. Just what I need in starting my journey in Middle-Earth. I'll be keeping an eye on your LOTRO guides. :)
Thanks for the table.
On the much neglected Prologues, I have just run through the Shire one and have blogged the complete thing as part of my Lotro Immersion Project at

Have to say chapters 13 through 15 involved quite hideous amounts of travel, you will spend far more time travelling to locations than actually questing. And more often than not the locations are the same two and you ping pong back and forth between them many times.
The ones in Forochel were particularly gruelling having to go round the lake each time to talk to the other quest giver only to then be sent right back again. As a froob the lack of swift travel and in some areas no kind of auto travel at all swift or not certainly puts Vol 1 at the bottom of my to do list on future alts.
Yup, lots of traveling. The November update will remedy that if you are one of the VIP to Premium downgraders.
Well I finished all of the quests in Vol 1 and everything stopped. I cannot get the quest to take the news to Rivendell so therefore cannot get my horse as reward. Does anybody have any ideas at all???
what to do in 1.11.5?
i've looked to the east from top of Amon Raith
but still nothing
Hmm, there may not be a blatant hint about looking like in some other quests (one I recall is from TS). You need to emote /look once in the right area.
thx for tip man
glad to meet so friendly community on this site
Book 15 Chapter 12 is really hard, any tips? I soloed most of Volume 1 and was wondering if anyone or if its even possible to solo the last chapter of Volume 1?
it is where you have to help kill witch king?
1st boss is very easy, just autoattack him untill he mark you, then amarthiel(dont remember her name) buff you, and just go to boss and let him to attack you. The second one is harder, ive done it with hunter(i was hunter and my buddy was hunter too) 1 of us attack him and 2nd one just escape, and repeat after boss aggro on other player(we were in strenght stances, its 40% slow from shoots). It was easy. But its relly to do solo. 1st time i tried, i made a mistake and didnt used any food before fight(for regen). After you make some dmg to boss, there are spaws few weak mobs, and after you kill them you have few seconds, so you can regen ur mana\hp(with food or others). Just keep tanking and let npc attack that boss too
ps sorry for bad english
The trouble with soloing the epic books with Inspired Greatness is that the encounters themselves were designed for full groups and some have mechanics that confound particular classes.
I've found that many chapters can be done with two players and you will still get the IG buff, albeit scaled done a bit for two players. Look for a partner of a class that complements yours and try again.
I failed part of book 3 from Esteldin (the quest where you have to rescue a dwarf from a little caravan), and I'm nit sure where to restart it. Halbarad has nothing for me. Could this be because I have moved onto books past thus one? Or how can I fix this? Any ideas?
To restart that quest, return to Othrikar and talk to Hannar, the dwarf who sent you to free Dori.
Ajay, thanks for the tip on 1.13.6, the Dourhand Mines. The trick is finding the right hole! Hint: don't go down the wooden stairs. Take the stone passage on the left. With my 51 champion I was able to defeat the mobs that attack after the fall. Just buff up and have your backup heals ready.
From what I have read so far, it appears that the easiest way to complete Volume I soloing is with a Captain. The reason is that the Inspired Greatness buff applies to your herald as well, so in effect you get almost the equivalent of a two-person fellowship, but without a diminished bonus. I started books 9-15 at level 50, and by the end I had leveled to 55 (though I did other quests as well), with morale stats at the end reaching about 20,000 for my Captain and about 12,000-13,000 for the herald (after all other skill-related buffs, of course), which gives a pretty good advantage.
I had some trouble with 1.14.15, mostly because of poor tactics (not killing the ads before attacking the boss in the final encounter), and 1.15.12, when I wasn't careful with the morale of Narmeleth (formerly knownn as Amarthiel), so I let her die once. Other than that, it was quite easy, even too easy at times. Indeed, 1.13.6 was frustrating at first, before I saw a tip which whole to fall through. On the other hand, I managed to get out the normal way, so it wasn't really that hard (though this method is quite slow). If you don't want to use the whole method, there is a lever just around the entrance area, which opens a passage, and then it is a long grind until you reach to the chamber where the journal is.
In the end, however, I guess having the herald and some heal skills really pays off if you want to solo Volume I, something that other classes cannot benefit from.
I play a guardian main, and the soloing with Inspired Greatness was absurdly easy. My Guardian focuses on damage mitigation, so with that amplfied by IG, the only instace that I was even slightly concerned about as the one with Mordirith, and that only took me down to about 15k/27k. Now I'm doing on my hunter, and am having quite a hard time of it(comparitively).
IG definately buffs someclasses more than others
Do all the Books have to be done in order? I am currently on Book 8 and had some problems going solo, wondered if I could pick up some of the later ones until I get some fellowship help or are the prior books prerequisites to getting the next book quests. I know some of the earlier ones you could do seperate books or chapters at the same time, but not sure at this level. Great site for info!
Some (but not all!) of the books require you finish the previous book. For example, you must complete book 4 to unlock book 5, but you do not have to complete book 5 to unlock book 6.
In your case, I am almost certain you can skip ahead to book 9 and come back and finish book 8 later. However, I urge you to try the chapters you are stuck on in a duo (a group of 2). Often the Inspired Greatness buff is as strong for a duo as it is solo, and combining the skills of two classes may give you the tools to complete the encounter without having to assemble a full group.
Happy questing!
I did duo with a kin mate and made it through book 8! I then started on Book 9 on my own and I don't think I could have without completeing book 8. Thanks.
Burglars should have an easier time with 1.13.6. I soloed it last night at 55 (though there were still a couple close calls when too many piled on me--HIPS, I love you...) Stealthing allows the Burglar to get to the book of heraldry with minimal fights (there are some where you will be inevitably spotted and need to fight three mobs or more).
Dropping through the hole would have been a whole lot easier now that I know about that, and would be recommended for Burgs. (Use Safe Fall, my fellow treasure-hunters, and hit the ground swinging!)
