Revised for Update 2
Volume II of the epic story continues as you follow the Fellowship into the Mines of Moria and beyond. All Volumes of the epic story are free, including access to the instances and skirmishes you'll need to complete them. An exception is the Epilogue: Gorothul, where you need the Mirkwood quest pack to enter the Sammath Gul instance.
For Update 2 (March 21st), Volume II has been "solofied". The Inspired Greatness buff is available for Book 4, Chapter 7 (2.4.7) and& Book 6, Chapter 8 (2.6.8), meaning these can be completed by less than a full fellowship, even solo players. See the Epic Volume II "Solofication" Dev Diary for more info.
Further, the Book 5, Chapter 5 (2.5.5) Battle of Moria instances have been converted to skirmishes. See the Battle for Moria (2.5.5) Skirmishes Dev Diary for more info.
The chart below shows the levels, starting NPC, special rewards and repeatable chapters for each book in Volume II. Note that the new skirmishes are repeatable via the skirmish join panel.

So Vol 2 can't be done solo? I'm at II.4.7, and it doesn't give me a solo option. Now, I'd prefer to do some of these in a group context, don't get me wrong, but it can be so hard to find a group while leveling.
Also, for vol 1 you could skip some books. Does not seem to be the case for vol 2. Correct?
Both great questions.
First, only Volume 1 gives the Inspired Greatness Buff, which allows you to complete it solo. You'll have to find a full fellowship for 2.4.7, 2.5.5 and 2.6.8.
It is possible to skip ahead to Volume 2, Book 9, Siege of Mirkwood, then come back later and do the rest. It's also possible to start book 7 before completing the earlier books, but DON"T DO IT! You'll lose out on the legendary trait you get for completing Books 1 to 6.
Wow, thanks for the really quick response. Great site, btw. Just so I'm clear, and don't mess things up, I CAN safely skip ahead to book 9 without losing the legendary trait - just CAN'T skip ahead to book 7?
Oh, and I assume that I can do the group quests with people who have already completed the quests? And are there sufficient rewards to make it worthwhile for people to do that?
Thanks.
Yep, I just did that on my Riddermark minstrel. I skipped ahead to Book 9 (and Volume III), and now am going back now to work on Book 6. Just finish 2.6.8 before starting Book 7.
The Sage of Moria, standing next to the Reflecting Pool in 21st Hall, offers a quest for your helpers. The reward is one or two Marks of Victory, which can be bartered for chests that ~usually give relics for your legendary item. I wish it always did, it would make it a stronger motivator.
I was able to complete 2.6 after doing 2.7-9 on my minstrel and received the legendary trait. I also did it on my captain and my champion that way. All of them received their legendaries upon completing 2.6. Only my guardian did 2.6 before doing 2.7.
As for Marks of triumph and victory, ever since skirmish marks became such a useful currency, they both have been sorely needing a revamp or at the very least a way to convert them into skirmish marks.
can anyone tell me what to do in 2.9.17
i have no idea where to run, i reached that point on map, checked that "castle", killed some elite, but still no any door to enter instance
The entrance to the instance is below the castle, way down by the river.
Does anyone have a guide for getting through 2.5.5? We did Way of the Smiths just fine, but The Battle of the Deep Way is very challenging. I tried with a group of mostly 65's, and we failed. Repeatedly. This was rather disheartening considering we were about 7 levels above recommended. No wonder it's hard to find people to help with this!
I managed to complete it with a group of 60+. Basically, the problem with that instance is the multiple, simultaneous attacks. You may need to split up the group. We had 2 guards in our fellowship, so splitting up was a choice for us. Have a support person for the guardian (healer or captain works), and make sure the other group (hopefully with DPS and a healer) burns down one attack quickly. Then, have the fellowship regroup. The central location is the most important since your dwarf friend must be protected there. Be sure that your dwarf buddy isn't getting attacked too much and also that there isn't a troll nearby. Trolls dish out AOE damage. Another pointer is to keep the mobs away from the barricades, especially those with AOE.
So according to this, the epic quest line is not free, and you need the Mirkwood Expansion?
According to this, Volume II is 99% free and the Mirkwood Expansion is not required for all but one quest in the option Volume II epilogue. It's hyperbole to make it sound like you NEED the Mirkwood expansion.
I urge you to post constructively to the Suggestions forum or /bug this in game. They need to remove that quest from the book and deed.
By the moria expansion on www.lotro.com/free.php? (details) they say:
(*): Purchasers of the Mines of Moria™ expansion get access to the Mines of Moria region and content, premium classes (Rune-Keeper and Warden), legendary items feature, Tier 6 crafting feature, 2 extra character slots and a level cap 60 . Purchasers of the Siege of Mirkwood™ expansion get access to the Siege of Mirkwood region and content, a level cap of 65 and the Siege of Mirkwood skirmishes.
Does this mean the lvl cap without MoM is currently 50? Than it would be impossible to complete :(
And second: on this site (lotro.mmorsel) they say you earn a legendary item by completing book 1 of MoM. But can you use it? cause on lotro.com they say you get the LI system by purchasing MoM
